Abstract The design and development of a solar lantern having a photo-voltaic panel, high efficiency lamp, rechargeable battery and a charge control circuit is addressed. The solar rechargeable lanterns are discussed as a low cost and flexible lighting option for large rural community sections. Various aspects of solar lantern development which are discussed include: customer research and product specification; design and development; prototype production and household testing; selection of manufacturing licenses; tooling and setting up for production; and marketing. The photo-voltaic system mentioned for the lantern simply converts the solar energy in electrical energy to charge the lantern battery. (Edited abstract) (Auth abstract) XX
