Abstract The use of contour crafting (CC) as an additive-fabrication technology to create exceptionally smooth and accurate surfaces was studied. The technology makes use of computer control to exploit the superior surface-forming capability of troweling to create planar and freeform surfaces. Experiments with thermoplastics highlighted the versatility of the process in the rapid construction of large objects and in aerospace and automative industries. (Edited abstract) 19 Refs.
