Handwriting: Visual-Perceptual-Motor Components
Description: This workshop describes the design and results of a single subject study, involving a multi-disciplinary treatment approach to handwriting problems in a 13-year-old student with a primary diagnosis of learning disorder. Content also includes 1. theoretical foundations for visual-perceptual-motor problems and implications for learning; 2. the performance-based assessment/intervention model used in the study; and 3. strategies developed by an OT and PT team for adaptation of therapeutic and maintenance activities in natural environments. learning experiences are provided through lectures, discussion, audio-visuals, handouts, and participation labs.
Objectives: Participants will be able to:
• Understand the theoretical foundations for visual-perceptual-motor problems affecting handwriting,
• Plan and implement an efficacy study within the context of an ongoing treatment program,
• Use a performance-based assessment/intervention/maintenance model in home, school, and community environments, and
• Plan intervention programs to improve functional hand skills.
