John Wilkinson (ABT1760-18??)

Introduction

In the interest of developing the legacy of John Wilkinson of Leeds, Yorkshire, England and his descendants; I submit the following as a *work-in-progress* . . .

First: I want to express thanks to my fellow Researchers for their guidance, input, and support of this effort. In those situations where we can't identify a primary or secondary resource, I've provided the submitter's name as the source.

Genesis

John Wilkinson and his wife, Ellen Parkinson, were married in and had three sons (John, Thomas and Robert) baptised in St. Peter's Church (Church of England), Leeds, Yorkshire, England between 1779 and 1785. Our research is presented to acquaint future generations with his English origins and how some of his descendants emmigrated from England to the Unitied State.

John Wilkinson was reflected in his three sons' baptismal records as *of Quarry Hill*; therefore I submit the following excerpt, as a means of providing the reader an understanding of the Wilkinson environmental background. For it was from this area of Yorkshire, that this Wilkinson lineage in the New World grows.

"Quarry Hill" by Keith Feeney
Quarry Hill is still with us. As you would expect the site originally was a geographical feature. In the very early days the site was next to the centre but as the centre of Leeds shifted the site became a suburb on the edge. It is sandwiched between the Parish Church to the south, Leeds centre and The Leylands to the west, Mabgate and Burmantofts to the north and Burmantofts, Richmond Hill and the Bank to the east. The site at that time (1780s) would have been a pleasant green area but the Industrial Revolution saw an end to that. Along with graveyards and foundries you had the gas works which gave a 'pleasant aroma' to the area. This was before smokeless fuel so the whole area was covered in soot. With the booming population countless houses were crammed in between these utilities. Cholera was a frequent visit or as the builders thought inside toilets a luxury so placed just one facility at the end of the street for everybody to use. As you can see - a delightful place. When the need to build a new indoor market came along the council siezed the opportunity to buy up the land on Quarry Hill and knocked the whole mess down. Today the site has various 'arts' buildings including the West Yorkshire Theatre and also the 'Kremlin' - an enormous Social Services building with a chrome aerial-like sructure on the roof. Leeds people either love it or loathe it.

Available On-line

In recognition of the privacy of living individuals, we are only making available on-line the first five generations. Also in support of these same privacy guidelines, we have removed any genealogical data on any possible living individuals.

Although only the first 5 generations are here, our database consist of over 350 John Wilkinson descendants and 195+ spouses. This information is available for sharing with Wilkinson family researchers in the hope to gleaming more information on this family.

Contents

Since this is a *work-in-progress*, I've not used a story board format. Instead, I have used a 5-generation group sheet structure to present our known facts — in the hope that you will digest our results and submit your comments, corrections, and additions to this effort.

You may start your research by going directly to John Wilkinson

I would like to note that we are aware that most original records were handwritten and while we did our best to transcribe the records carefully, you may find errors and omissions. We will be happy to make any changes, yet we must have a source for the changes. Please send Harold Wilkinson your Comments, Additions and identifiable Corrections.
