                    American Songwriter
                    1949 - 1984
There has been little in the press or the music books about Tom Jans.

Roy Dea (producer of Gary Stewart's "Out of Hand "album):

"Out of hand was a song we found out on a guy by the name of Mentor Williams ... Paul's brother, who wrote 'Drift  Away'.  Gary and me  were always buying albums by songwriters, and we came across this Mentor  Williams  record  and bought it to dig through it for songs.
'Out of Hand' was co-written by a guy named Tom Jans and Jeff Barry. We shortened it up and put it out.
It was big record for us."

Originally released on RCA in 1975 produced by Roy Dea, "Out Of Hand "is a landmark in the
history of country music. It established Gary Stewart as a country music star-containing three Top 5 singles, "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)," "Drinkin' Thing" and the title cut-and showed him to be a true innovator by combining elements of rock and blues with the sounds of the honky-tonk. Tunes like "Draggin' Schackles," which features some dual lead guitar work a la the Allman Brothers, and the lazy swing style of "Williamson County"  helped
spread the boundaries of country a bit wider and
influenced many outlaws and new traditionalists
that followed. By releasing this classic, Hightone again proves they've got their ear to the street, giving the fans of real country music what they've been screaming for- gritty down-home music with a ton of heart and no string section in sight.
