Although he's been knocking
out honky tonk classics
nearly 20 years, Gary Stewart
is still at the top of his
game. "I'm A Texan" is the
kind of country record that
grows better with each listen.
It brims with Stewart's
trademark gruff vocals, the
most distinctive in country music along side of George Jones, and the hard, raw
sound that Nashville has
turned its back on.
There's a bit of irony in
the title: Stewart was born in
Kentucky and currently resides
in Florida, although he
performs regularly on weekends
in the Lone Star State
to overflow crowds, which,
at least, gives him arguing
rights to this title. He
builds on his reputation, earned on his past records, as a two fisted drinker-"Hand
Me
Another" and "Make It A Double"
are included here,
as is the Southern rock tinged
"Draggin' Leather." There's also two finely
wrought covers, the smoky ballad
made famous by James Carr, "Dark End Of The Street," and a bluesy take
on "One Night," which may cause you to forget that it has long been associated
with Elvis Presley.
