TWIRL-2 & WALK-2
Leading is indicating the pattern you intend to
dance next, so the Girl can follow if she wishes.
Leading is not forcing the Girl to dance any pattern
or way, she has the choice of not following. This is
true with the TWIRL. The Man does not TWIRL the
Girl, he simply indicates TWIRL to her by ARCHING the
LEAD HANDS high enough for her to pass under. The
Girl TWIRLS herself. The Man should not try to
TWIRL, crank or shove her under the arch. The Girl
does not have to TWIRL because the Man or the
choreographer want's her to TWIRL, it is her
decision.
TWIRL-2 is a one-measure pattern of two slow steps,
the Man dances a SLOW VINE 2 (Girl SLOW ROLL 2).
BUTTERFLY position Man face wall on-R, ready ARCH
lead hands:
  Man SLOW VINE 2: Side-L, - , behind-R, - ;
(Girl TWIRL-2: Side-R heel to ball 1/2 R-turn under
arch face wall, - , side-L on ball 1/2 R-turn to face
Man, - ); end facing position.
  Again, TWIRL-2: Man SLOW VINE 2 Side, - , behind, -
; (Girl ROLL 2: Side face wall, - , side face Man, -
;). Again, TWIRL-2: VINE 2 (Girl ROLL 2).
  Again, TWIRL-2;.
The Girl must progress down dance-line on the
TWIRL-2 in order to stay even with the Man who
progresses two steps on his VINE. Girl note how far
the Man progresses on his VINE 2 and plan to progress
the same distance on the ROLL 2.
Practice the TWIRL-2 several times giving attention
to progressing down dance-line.
ARCHED hands should remain over the Girl's head
during the TWIRL, high enough so she can stand tall.
The Girl should not stoop, squat or duck her head to
TWIRL. Hand contact may be broken to TWIRL if the
Man is too short or cannot otherwise ARCH the LEAD
hands high enough.
Man's behind step is an important part of
maintaining ARCHED hands over the Girl's head. The
Man's behind step places his L-shoulder adjacent to
the Girl allowing him to reach above her head. If
the Man steps in front or thru, instead of behind,
his L-shoulder is placed on the opposite side of his
body from the Girl. This reduces Man's ability to
reach over Girl's head, without twisting his body out
of shape, lowering the ARCH, or causing the Girl to
bend and twist to maintain ARCH hand contact.
Take BUTTERFLY position Man face wall on-R, ARCH,
ready:
TWIRL-2, WALK-2:
Man VINE 2 Side, - , behind, -(Girl ROLL 1, - , 2, -
); Side, - , thru, - ;.
  Again, TWIRL-2 & WALK-2:
Man VINE 1, - , 2, - (Girl ROLL 1, - , 2, -); Side,

            ROCK BACK, RECOVER;
            THRU ROCK RECOVER;
            SIDE ROCK, RECOVER;
ROCK
In this case ROCK is a slow forward step. Consider
ROCK as a forward step except when told to rock
sideward, thru or back. The distinguishing feature
of a ROCK step is the freed foot remains extended
touching the starting spot. Do not TRACK or move to
the freed foot to the ROCKing foot. The feed foot
remains extended marking it's starting spot for a
RECOVER step.
RECOVER
A recover step usually returns dancer to the
extended free foot following a ROCK step. Recover
returns dancer to the starting spot on the extended
or originally weighted foot.

BACK ROCK
A BACK ROCK, ROCK BACK or DIP is a backward step
where the freed foot remains extended touching the
starting spot. Do not TRACK or move the freed foot
beside the rocking foot. The freed foot marks the
starting spot for a recover step.
DIP, - , RECOVER, - ;. Closed position man face wall

SIDE ROCK
A SIDE ROCK or ROCK SIDE is a sideward step where
the freed foot remains extended touching and marking
the starting spot. Do not TRACK or move the freed
foot beside the rocking foot. The cue "SIDE ROCK"
specifies movement direction before qualifying the
step as a rock. The cue "Rock Side" identifies the
step as a rock before specifying a direction.
Dancers should know the step direction prior to type
of step.
SIDE ROCK, -, RECOVER, - ;. Closed position man
face wall on-R: Side rock-L, - , recover-R, - ;.
THRU ROCK
A THRU ROCK or ROCK THRU is a THRU step where the
freed foot remains extended to touch and mark the
starting spot. Do not TRACK or move the freed foot
beside the rocking foot.

Take closed position Man face wall on-R, retain
LEAD-hand hold, ready:
Man stand in place - do not move, Girl take one
large step sideward toward dance-line and close.
Partners L-hips should now be adjacent. You should
be standing outside and to the left of partner. Both
feet should be outside of partners feet. This is
SIDECAR position.
Sidecar-position is outside of partner with L-hips
adjacent.
Banjo-position is outside of partner with R-hips
adjacent.

SCISSORS
Note the term is SCISSORS and NOT SCISSORS THRU.
The term THRU is missing because both partners do not
step thru. There is a difference in the patterns
scissors and scissors thru. You must remain alert on
the cue scissors to see if the modifier term thru is
added. The girl must be especially alert for the
modifier term thru.
The first two steps of the scissors are side and
close, the same as for the side two-step, the box and
the scissors-thru.
Step 1 is a quick side step on ball.
Step 2 is a quick close step on flat.
Step 3 is a slow drive step which impels dancers
forward (girl back).
Step timing is the typical: Quick, quick, slow, -

Strict adherence to the step words results in awkward
cross steps. Cross steps of the scissors flows
smoother and easier if bodies turn on the side and
close steps. Blend from closed position to sidecar
on the side and close steps. Then man step forward

PICKUP
A change from semi-closed to closed position. The
PICKUP is usually cued as "WALK, - , PICKUP, - ;" for
a girl's one step L-turn blend to closed position.
From semi-closed position facing dance-line man on-R:
the man's part is simply Walk, - , 2, - ; or

also Walk, - , 2, - ; or Forward-R, - , forward-L 1/4
L-turn, fan-R `no step' counter clockwise; start

2 of measure 1, and finish the pickup in closed
position on step 1 of measure 2.
Caution: Girl do not step in front of man to closed
position on step one or two of measure one. A step
in front of man on either step of measure one will
result in the man stepping on or colliding with the
girl's foot. Girl blend to closed position on step
one of the follow-on measure, with a back-R step
R-toe pointed between man's feet.
SCISSORS PROGRESS
SCISSORS PROGRESS is similar to SCISSORS. Scissors
starts with man facing wall and moving back and forth
in the same place. The SCISSORS PROGRESS starts with
man facing dance-line and dancers progress toward
dance-line. The first two steps of the scissors
progress are side and close, the same as for the side
two-step, the box, the scissors-thru and scissors.
Step 1 is a quick side step on ball.
Step 2 is a quick close step on flat.
