Blend from SEMI-CLOSED POSITION to CLOSED POSITION

and vice versa to combine TWO FORWARD TWO-STEP with

previous patterns.  Blending is easy, dancers blend

to the next position on the last, the slow step, of

the ongoing pattern.  A walk thru gives dancers

advance knowledge of position changes and time to

consider how to blend to follow-on positions.

TWO-STEP rhythm and count are the same for all

patterns.

A break in RHYTHM, count or step sequence

constitutes a dance type change.  Rhythm changes are

sometimes used to add variety.  Dancers are warned of

RHYTHM deviations.  Otherwise take 3-steps per

measure with Quick, quick, slow, - ; timing.

TWO TURNING TWO-STEPS

  A 6-step 2-measure couple's closed position full

R-turn pattern.  Progress down dance-line as you

R-turn in closed position.  Take closed position Man

facing wall on-R, remember CLOSED POSITION rules:

Shoulders parallel, R-foot aimed between partner's

feet, L-foot outside of partner's-R, Man look over

Girl's R-shoulder, Girl look over her L-hand on front

of Man's R-shoulder, remain in CLOSED position during

the R-turn pattern from start to finish.

OK, CLOSED position Man face wall on-R, ready:

Side-L 1/4 R-turn face reverse (Girl in place-R face

dance-line), close-R, back-L 1/4 R-turn face center

(Girl forward-R face wall), - ;  In place-R 1/4

Again, CLOSED position Man face wall on-R, ready:

BE SURE TO STAY IN CLOSED POSITION WHILE TURNING!!!

  TWO TURNING TWO-STEPS:

Turn face reverse, close, turn face center, - ;

Turn face dance-line, close, turn face wall, - ;.

  Again: TWO TURNING TWO-STEPS:

Half turn face center 1, 2, 3, - ;

Half-turn face wall 2, 2, 3, - ;.

  Again: TWO TURNING TWO-STEPS:

Half turn face center; Half turn face wall;.

  Again: TWO TURNING TWO-STEPS:

Stay in CLOSED position during the turns, feet must

inter-mesh with partner's feet.  AVOID SEMI-CLOSED

POSITION, any separation of dancer's lead sides makes

turning awkward, if Girl looks toward LEAD HANDS it

tends to open lead sides.

Practice TWO TURNING TWO-STEPS: keep a tight CLOSED

position and progress down dance-line.  RE-WALK for

re-dance to MUSIC as needed till ready for next

lesson.  Progress on turns to avoid being a traffic

hazard.  Fake turns and other steps as necessary but

keep the rhythm and keep dancing.  Faking is stepping

in time with the beat using Quick, quick, slow, - ;

rhythm, if steps are forgotten.  Faking keeps dancers

in step with the music on the proper foot so they can

continue when the next familiar cue is recognized.

Practice, and don't become discouraged.  You have

the ability to learn the turning two-step.  Be

persistent, each new pattern requires thought and

practice to develop proficiency.  Each pattern

learned increases knowledge and makes learning the

next pattern easier.  Once you can keep the rhythm

without thinking of the steps, blends and turns flow

in response to thoughts of where the body is going.

CIRCLE AWAY & TOGETHER

Review the TWO TURNING TWO-STEPS and other patterns

which cause problems before starting this lesson.

CIRCLE AWAY & TOGETHER is a 6-step 2-measure

pattern.  SEMI-CLOSED position both face dance-line,

ready: Listen and think: Each dancer's footpath

traces a small individual solo circle in 2-measures.

Measure-1: the Man dances a half L-circle toward

the center to face reverse (Girl dances a half

R-circle toward the wall to face reverse);

  Measure-2: each dancer's footpath traces a solo

half-circle to complete the full circle and blend to

SEMI-CLOSED position facing dance-line;.

SEMI face dance-line Man on-R, ready:

CIRCLE AWAY & TOGETHER: Forward-L, close-R,

remember CLOSED position:

Shoulders parallel, R-foot aimed between partners

feet,   LEAD HANDS extended at Girl's shoulder level,

Man's R-hand on Girl's back between shoulder blades

fingers touching her spine and pointed slightly down,

  Girl's L-hand on front of Man's R-shoulder,

  Girl look over her L-hand,

  bodies about eight inches apart,

  retain lead hand hold, Man's L-hand & Girl's

R-hand, other hands will be adjusted.

OK, Girl do not move, remain in place.

Man take one small step sideward-L toward

dance-line, then close in place.

This positions dancers to the left of partner, with

R-sides adjacent.

LEAD hands still joined with Girl's R-arm fully

extended at shoulder level.

  Man's R-hand is on the Girl's L-waist.

  Girl's L-hand is on front of Man's R-shoulder.

Each dancers has both feet outside of partner's

R-foot.     This is BANJO POSITION and may be referred

to as R-hip to R-hip position.  Square dancers may

recognize this as SWING POSITION.  Some free-style

ballroom studios call this OUTSIDE position.  Banjo

position is similar to the way a Man holds a banjo.

Review banjo position at the next lesson.

VINE

  VINE is a three-step one-measures sideward moving

pattern.  BUTTERFLY POSITION Man face wall on-R,

ready:   Side-L, behind-R, side-L, - ;

  (Girl Side-R, behind-L, side-R, - ;).

Behind is a step in back of the weighted foot.  The

step behind is a small step directly in back of or

behind the weighted foot, not a cross beyond the

weighted foot.  The term VINE is short for GRAPEVINE.

VINE is named for the foot path which resemble the

route of a vine growing in and out along a fence.

Again, BUTTERFLY POSITION Man face wall on-R, ready:

Side, behind, side, - ;.

Note the body moves in the same direction as the

first measure of the SIDE TWO-STEP.  However the body

twists on the behind step.  Let the body twist to

make the behind step easy.

Again: BUTTERFLY, VINE: Side, behind, side, - ;.

Stop the tape and practice the VINE several times.

|

REVERSE VINE

REVERSE VINE is a 3-step 1-measure sideward moving

pattern.  REVERSE VINE uses opposite footwork and

moves in the opposite direction of the VINE.

BUTTERFLY Man face wall on-R, ready: SIDE TWO-STEP:

Side, close, side, - ; other way Side, close, side, -

;.

Note the SIDE TWO-STEP moves dancers sideward,

first toward dance-line and then toward reverse.  The

VINE & REVERSE VINE moves the dancers in the same

directions as bodies twist on the behind steps.

Take BUTTERFLY Man face wall on-R, ready:

  VINE:

Side, behind, side, - ; now the other way

  REVERSE VINE:

Side, behind, side, - ;.

The steps on the REVERSE VINE are Man: Side-R,

behind-L, side-R,(Girl Side-L, behind-R, side-L,) -;.

Again, BUTTERFLY Man face wall on-R, ready:

  VINE & REVERSE VINE:

Side, behind, side, - ; Side, behind, side, - ;

  SIDE TWO-STEP:

Side, close, side, - ; Side, close, side, - ;

VINE & REVERSE VINE;;  SIDE TWO-STEP;;.

Bodies should turn to face diagonal reverse on the

behind step, and to face diagonal dance-line on the

REVERSE VINE.  The behind step is sometimes referred

to as a cross behind or cross in back step.  Do not

cross beyond the weighted foot, simple step behind

it.  A cross turns the body too far and requires

additional time.  Stop the tape and practice the VINE

& REVERSE VINE;;, let body turn to step behind.  When

ready walk the exercise.

THE ONE-STEP OR WALKING & RUNNING PATTERNS

The TWO-STEP RHYTHM of Quick, quick, slow, - ; is

often broken with walks or runs.

  Walk steps are slow steps.

  Run steps are quick steps.

WALK TWO is a 1-measure pattern of two slow steps.

RUN four is a 1-measure pattern of four quick

steps.  The TWO-STEP rhythm Quick, quick, slow, - ;

is intentionally broken to add variety and pleasure

to TWO-STEP dances.

Walk steps taken from heel to ball.

Run steps are taken on the balls of the feet.

WALK-2

Walk alerts dancers to a change of rhythm.  WALK-2

is a one measure pattern of two slow steps.  Take

OPEN position both face dance-line Man on-R, ready:

  WALK-2:

Forward-L, - , forward-R, - (Girl R, - , L, - );.

  Again, WALK-2: Slow, - , slow, - ;.

  Again, WALK-2:  1, - , 2, - ;.

WALK-4

WALK-4 is a 2-measure pattern of four walking

steps.  Take OPEN position facing dance-line Man

on-R, ready:

  WALK-4:  Forward 1, - , 2, - ; 3, - , 4, - ;.

  Again: Slow, - , slow, - ;  Slow, - , slow, - ;.

Remember the rule of the rhythm: Always take three

steps unless told otherwise.  The cue WALK tells

dancers otherwise.  The number following the cue WALK

tells dancers how many steps to walk.

RUN-4

RUN-4 is a 1-measure pattern of four quick steps.

Take OPEN position facing dance-line Man on-R,

ready: RUN-4: Forward-L, -R, -L, -R;.

Run steps are taken on the balls of the feet.

Run and walk steps are often paired for two-measure

patterns.  Take OPEN position face dance-line Man

on-R, ready:

  RUN-4: Quick, quick, quick, quick;

  WALK-2: Slow, - , Slow, - ;.

Again

A 2-measure VINE pattern of four slow steps.  The 4

tells dancers to take four steps, and the SLOW tells

them the speed of the steps.

Take BUTTERFLY position Man face wall on-R, ready:

  SLOW VINE-4: Side-L, - , behind-R, -; Side-L, - ,

Note the thru step is the same as the step in the

SCISSORS THRU, both dancers step thru the space

between them.  Replay the scissors thru lesson to

review the thru step.  Practice the SLOW vine several

times.  When ready walk the exercise.

Many patterns are danced with two, four, or eight

steps.  To distinguish such patterns from the

TWO-STEP RHYTHM a number suffix is used after the

term i.e.: SLOW BANJO WHEEL 4, SLOW CHANGE PLACES 4,

SLOW CIRCLE 4 [AWAY 2 & TOGETHER 2], SLOW CIRCLE 8

[AWAY 4 & TOGETHER 4], SLOW ARCH & LACE 8.  There is

no practice exercise for the patterns in the  VINE 2;

WALK-2; lesson.

The prefix SLOW is not used to cue WALK, because

WALK means SLOW steps.  RUN means quick steps.

VINE-4 & WALK-2

When the prefix SLOW is not used in front of the

VINE-4, it means dancers will take four quick steps

in one-measure.  Four steps in one-measure must be

quick steps.  The prefix quick is left out to

identify VINE-4 from SLOW VINE-4.  The prefix quick

may be added to alert less knowledgeable dancers, but

it is not required.  Take loose CLOSED position Man

face wall on-R, ready:

  VINE-4:

Side, behind, side, thru; WALK-2: 1, - , 2, - ;.

  Again:

VINE-4: Quick, quick, quick, quick;

WALK-2:  Slow, - , slow, - ;.

  Again:

VINE-4 & WALK-2;;.

Practice the VINE-4 & WALK-2;; several times.  When

ready walk the exercise.
