The Japanese language program at P.S. 171 lasted four years, ending in June 1999. In its fourth year, contrary to the program's original design, I was still the only Japanese teacher. I was seeing 17 classes and 400 students each week. I left with a deep sense of regret that the support originally intended for this program had not been provided, and the goal to develop a K-6 Japanese program had not been realized. I sincerely hope that my students have fond memories of our four years together and will maintain an appreciation for the Japanese language and culture.
