Oscar - The Gift Shop Kitty

This page is dedicated to the memory of a very special friend. Over the years we've had several cats come in and out of our family, as many people do. But none have touched us the way this grey, tiger-striped, little guy did. We called him Oscar.

We first became involved with the Gift Emporium early in 2003. Abandoned, he was found living within the walls of our store. He was so small that maneuvering around them wasn't difficult. With the help of a neighbor we were able to retrieve him from his wood and plaster abode.

Because of his size, we couldn't believe what our veterinarian told us when we took him in for an examination. The vet estimated Oscar to be from 1 to 1 1/2 years old. We found that hard to believe when you looked at him and realized he couldn't have weighed more than 7 or 8 pounds. What the vet told us next explained everything; Oscar, was FIV positive.

What is FIV? Simple, it is the feline form of HIV. And, is every bit debilitating, as it’s
Human counterpart is. In some ways worse; least the human has the mental faculties to understand what is taking place.
He stayed with us for about 9 months. During that time, we had the option of sending him off to live at a no-kill animal shelter; which, specializes in taking care of pets with similar conditions. But, we just couldn't do that and instead opted to care of him ourselves. The end finally came on November 7th.
Oscar was more than just a family pet to us. Of all the animals we've ever had, Oscar was the gentlest, most loving creature you could have ever had the privilege of knowing. And, because of him we've decided to dedicate this site in his memory.
Every venture, business and otherwise, comes with its own set of risks. Being able to face those risks head on is a testament to one's character. Though he could have never understood what was happening to his tiny body, Oscar embodied strength through gentleness. He never once growled or, struck out, at anyone in anger or frustration. Instead, whenever anyone came to visit he greeted them in the same manner; purring, with his head lowered for you to scratch it. He loved that the most.
Keeping all that in mind we've decided to dedicate our business to helping others like Oscar. And so, we've set up the:
Tax deductible donations can be mailed to Dr. Chet Paluchowski at the Hunterdon Hills Animal Hospital. These contributions are to be directed towards families in financial need. They will be used to offset the cost of care for terminally ill cats with FIV and/or renal (kidney related) diseases.

Donations may be mailed to the address below. As with any such help, they would be greatly appreciated.
