Pop Goes The Frozen Treat
from the Muncie Star Press, by Michelle Kinsey - published July 20, 2006

Norah & SherryOn a hot day, there's nothing toddler Norah Williams enjoys more than a freezer pop.

OK, that's not exactly true. It doesn't have to be hot. It doesn't even have to be daytime. Norah loves them anytime, anywhere.

On a recent afternoon, she was carrying two of the cool treats around her kitchen, licking one, taking a bite out of the other.

And smiling. Big time.

But this wasn't your standard, store-bought Popsicle. It wasn't blue; it didn't have a crazy cartoon shape. It was quite plain, actually -- light beige, the color of apple juice. And that's just what it was -- a homemade apple juice pop made just hours before with lots of love.

Norah's mom, Sherry Ann McNett, started making the homemade freezer pops for her daughter this summer. "I do think it's better than buying them at the store," she said. "I don't want all of those artificial colors and flavors."

Not to mention the added sugar and preservatives.

And Norah doesn't seem to mind that the pops are plain, McNett added.Norah Ice Treats

Plus, McNett said, these homemade ones are much cheaper, which is good because she has to have a constant supply. "As soon as I take one out, I fill it back up," she said. "I can't run out."

The pops are usually of the apple juice variety. "They are less sticky than orange or pineapple," McNett said.

McNett recalled her mother making freezer pops for her as a child. "It's one of those good things you really want to pass on," she said.

And we're pretty sure Norah, who will be two in August, would happily agree.
