Two hours from the Waldheim Chalet in the Cradle Valley at the Northern end of the Overland Track, after a nice walk across a high altitude moor and a steep climb (testing those out of shape limbs you wish you had trained a little harder) you will come to a peak. Looking East provides you this spectacular view and a preview of what the next six days will show you. Welcome to the Overland Track!
At the beginning of the hike, all fitted out, seven days of food, gear (thanks Chris, Damon, and Soph), water. Well loaded down, sun shining contrary to normal, and high spirited, Jane and I set off.
A fairly uneventful first day led us to our first camp site near the Waterfall Valley Hut. Quite a few people only go up for a weekend and hike to this site for overnight camping, then return. This was the busiest site along the track.
The second day was a lot longer. Some of the people camping at Waterfall Valley brought with them a weather report of a storm coming across from the south. We decided to make a go of getting all the way to the Pelion Hut, 17+ K across wide open, windy moors. Once across the moors, the terrain bacame a lot more hilly, providing us with more views from the top of the bottom of the world.
Sorry guys... still working on the rest of the story......
