Although the photograph below is quite difficult to make out, it's fascinating. To quote Betty Ownsbey's message to me: "I have several rare photos of Powell (alias Paine or Payne) as well as this one of him on the gallows. This one is extremely rare - the Library of Congress and National Archives have apparently lost the glass negative for it. It is the only one that clearly shows Powell's face while he is seated on the gallows. This is from a stereocard which I own. A copy is in my book, however, it didn't turn out very well. I have scanned this image into the computer. Feel free to use it on your Lewis page if you wish. The gentleman kneeling beside him is the Reverend Augustus Stryker. Dr. A. D. Gillette stood behind young Powell and shielded him with an umbrella. Powell is obviously praying in this photo, as he has his head down and his eyes are closed. Reverend Stryker later officiated at the marriage ceremony of one of Powell's girlfriends, Maggie Branson when she wed in 1867." |
