This site features photographs (taken between July 27, 2004 and March 2, 2006) of the Ohio River at Louisville, Kentucky, including photos of towboats, though the boat is often a small part of the overall composition. Most photos were scanned from 6x9 cm negatives and sized to approximately 1800x1200 pixels. (You can shrink them in your browser window if you want to view the whole image.) File sizes are generally in the 400 to 800 KB range and so will take a while to download over narrow-band connections.
The Internet Archive Wayback Machine seems to have some earlier photos available, though it is a hit-or-miss thing. If you have the patience, try the Wayback Machine archived versions of this website. (Javascript must be enabled.)
Reminder: To save an image to your hard drive, place the pointer over the image, then either right-click (Windows) or hold down the mouse button (Mac) to display a popup menu, then choose "Save Image As.." Some browsers will let you incorporate an image into your desktop by choosing "Set as Wallpaper" from the popup menu, though the image may be severely cropped unless you choose the correct display option. For example, in Windows 98SE, right-click the desktop; click on "Properties"; select "Stretch" from the Display options.
