Issue #3: July & August 1997:
Chicago. And Europe, too.

Freiburg, Germany: July 29 through July 31. Sticking to smaller towns, we spent two or three days in Freiburg. This is the first city that we visited where I didn't speak the language. While it was an adventure for the first day or so, the novelty wore off pretty quickly. We stayed in a family-run hotel outside of town called the Hotel Dionysos. Needless to say, we had language difficulties.

Freiberg Public Transportation Ticket.Freiburg is a small, college town and doesn't have too much in the way of sights. There were a couple of okay museums, but nothing compared to what we had seen in London and Paris. There was a large cathedral, but it was being refurbished and thus was covered up with scaffolding. There was a little marketplace. The main draw of Freiburg is that it is close to the Black Forest. A little forest path, easy walking distance from our hotel, took us up a large hill and offered beautiful views of the city. We spent one day at a little touristy lake, a 45-minute train ride from Freiburg.

While in Germany, I created a German Place-Name Generator. Again, when you need to fabricate a German-sounding place name to add spice to an elaborate vacation story, just pick one word from each of the three columns.
