Issued June, 1917 by the Aero Club of Palermo. There were
originally 3 stamps of this design, monocolor (blue, red, green),
imperforate, on semi-transparent paper, size 45x50mm. These were also
surcharged with a red cross and "5c". The same design was also issued in 4
bicolor stamps by the Palermo Philatelic Club (black & red, black & blue,
black & lilac, dark blue & red), perforated, on opaque paper, size 55x60mm.
This issue was also surcharged as the previous. These 4 sets are listed
in the 1949 Catalogue by G. Landmans of Milan, Italy "Catalogo Delle
Cartoline e Vignette Ufficiali e Semiufficiali di Posta Aerea Italiana".
The sets are listed as #80-82, 83-85, 86-89, 90-93. They are not listed in
Sanabria as semi-officials, so I suspect they were of a commemorative
nature. The surcharged varieties are listed in Mosbaugh's "Red Cross
Seals of the World" catalogue, but in reversed order (larger sized,
perforated set first). The lerger sized bicolor issue is listed by
Mosbaugh in 6 varieties, perf and imperf as: red & black; red, black &
blue on rose paper; red, black & violet - imperf.; red & blue; red & blue
- imperf.; red & purple. Also Mosbaugh lists the sizes differently -
43x55mm (large) and 35x45mm (small). (Possibly the Mosbaugh sizes are
design only, and the Landmans sizes include margins.) The Mosbaugh #s are
252.1 - 252.6 (large) and 252 A.1 - 252 A.3. Mosbaugh lists the first set
as "R" for each stamp ($10 - $25 in 1984) and "RR" for the second (small)
set of 3 ($25 - $50 in 1984). [Ray Petersen]
