This is apparently a free frank for French soldiers interned in Switzerland. What war, and
is it from any particular location?

I saw this offered in some auction in
different versions, tete-beche, colours, with or without dots...) The
Yvert & Tellier catalogue of Europe lists it as TIMBRE de FRANCHISE and the
year is the 1870. They are costly especially on cover About the war I can
only begin from the year 1870. In that year the France of Napoleon the
Third was beaten at Sedan battle by the Prussian troops of Bismarck. So
probably many of the French soldiers went to Switzerland as refugees. [Fabio Vaccarezza]

That is a wonderful site you have created! I do not
really think that No. 300 is an unknown though. It is as well
established in Zumstein as most Swiss Stamps. I have sent a copy of my
Album Page giving some summary information. [Ken Eadie]
