Another new local post from the former USSR republic of Turkmenistan. I know that Mary is a town in Turkmenistan, but I don't know what "Velayat" is. I surmise it could be the equivalent of oblast (province) or it could mean post. Anyone know?
I can only help you by saying that as far as I know, my knowledge of the Turkish languages being so poor, "vilayet" was the name given to provinces in the old Ottoman Empire, and apart from minor differences in spelling it is very close to "velayat". [Stefano Adinolfi]
It's seems you're right-"velayat" in the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire was the name to a province or a district. As far as I know the Turkmen are from Turkish origin and probably speak Turkish dialect. [Alon Priel]
