While I cannot tell you much about the stamp, I am able
to identify B. Palissy for you. Bernard Palissy (ca. 1510-1590) was a French
potter and author of works on ceramics, agriculture, religion and natural
history. He lectured on geology in 1575-1584, supplying actual specimens
from his personal mineral collection for inspection and study. In the field
of ceramics his name is still current in 'Palissy Ware,' ceramic plates
with naturalistic decoration, such as sea life, snakes, etc. You will find
more on him in the appropriate volume of the Dictionary of Scientific Biography.
I am sure his name will also be found in almost any encyclopeadia. [Stephen Pober]
