This is one of several large "stamps"
(from Tonga, Crete, Bavaria, Germany, Finland...). Who made these, and
how many stamps (and places) like these are there?

These are labels (oversized imitations) prepared by US stamp and cover dealer A. C.
Roessler. I have one of Crete also. These sometimes appeared on Roessler covers
and on mailings to his customers. [Brian McGrath]

Here are some similar stamps. [Rick Scott]

I see my friend Brian McGrath has identified this as a Roessler creation -
I'm glad to learn that. I can add further that they were issued se-tenant
and tête-bêche along with different varieties. In my Glass Slipper
Auctions I have had singles in blue and black, red and black, green and
black. In my 1998 sale I had a block of 10 with selvage on top, left and
right, printed in blue and black and consisting of 3 of the Tongan stamps
you illustrate (in positions 6, 7, & 10 in the block, with position 10
inverted) along with 7 stamps resembling the Crete 1905 5 Drachma Arkadi
Monastery & Mount Ida (the one in position 9 is inverted). I have also
seen a German 1902 5 Mark Wilhelm II at the 25th anniversary of the Empire
celebration. [Ray Petersen]
