This is one of a set of 56 military uniforms issued by Ajman in 1973, but the design
is completely obliterated with a black rectangle. I haven't seen the sheetlets to determine if all
of this particular design are so treated. What was so bad that this design had to be obliterated?

This stamp is so dubious it is not even included in the
listing of "Dunes" at the back of Stanley Gibbons' Ajman listing! By 1973
the only stamps valid in Ajman were those of the United Arab Emirates.
I have no idea of the reason behind the black bar but it is almost certainly
a bogus production which would never have been within a thousand miles
of Ajman. [Joll]

No argument there! I have since found the set of 56 but the obliteration is so complete I can't
identify which design was blacked out. Aha, I found an unoverprinted
sheet - not that it tells me any more... Has anyone seen similar items
from Ajman? Political reasons for defacing stamps wouldn't seem to apply
to topical sand dunes. Why this one? And why does it seem that the left stamp, which should be
the defaced stamp above, doesn't seem quite the same based on the tiny bits of design that
protrude out of the obliteration? [Rick Scott]
