| This Imperial issue has a large black "R" for registry. Is this a postal marking, applied to the cover on mailing, or were stamps available pre-stamped with the "R"? |

| The large R was used to cancel the stamp paying the registration fee, hence is usually found on the 5c value Waterlows. It occurs on other values, also in red. The handstamps were locally made and with enough covers we might manage to tie down the style to an individual town. I can send you a scan of a cover if it helps.
