Cadillac Mountain rises 1,530 feet above Frenchman Bay. The summit can be reached by car, and there are bathrooms and a gift shop at the top. The summit is the first spot in the U.S. that sees the sun each day. Count on cold and windy conditions, even during the summer. Since it's the highest spot on the island, the mountain offers great views in all directions. Oddly, from the town of Bar Harbor it's difficult to see the mountain. The best view is from a whale watching boat or other tour boat.

Fog rolling in from the ocean.

Eagle Lake to the west.
