There are five Porcupine Islands in Frenchman Bay. They are Bar Island, Sheep Porcupine, Bald Porcupine, Long Porcupine, and Burnt Porcupine. As can be seen both above and below, they do resemble porcupines.  In the picture above, all can be seen except for Bald Porcupine. The picture above was taken from an overlook in Acadia National Park. The town of Bar Harbor is at the top of the "r". Most of the land appearing behind the four porcupines is actually additional islands. The mainland - on the other side of the bay - is behind them. From Bar Harbor you can walk to Bar Island when the tide is out.

This is a shot of Bald Porcupine taken from the shore path in Bar Harbor. Note the rock face on the right side. The island was used for target practice in World War II.
