Descendants of William de Thoroboughe

The family originated in the North Ridings of Yorkshire. The town of Thornborough together with the Thorborough, Moors and Circle exist today North of Ripon. The following is a summary based upon the work of the late Charles C. Thornburg III. This is obviously not a complete listing of all of the descendants of William de Thoroboughe, and as such is presented in a summary form. A history of ancestors prior to William de Thoroboughe is also provided as a summary extract from research by Mr. Thornburg.

FIRST GENERATION

1. William de Thoroboughe was born in Thornborough in York County. William de Thornorough of Thornborough in York County, married a daughter of Sir John Croker of London.

He married a Miss Croker who was born in London. Her father was Sir John Croker.

William de Thoroboughe and Croker had the following children:

+2 i. Sir William 2 Thornburgh Knight. 


SECOND GENERATION

2. Sir William 2 Thornburgh Knight.

He was married to Anne Malvester. He was Knighted (probably through the influence of his grandfather Sir John Croker). Sir William 2 Thornburgh Knight and Anne Malvester had the following children:

+3 i. John Thornburgh. 


THIRD GENERATION

3. John Thornburgh.

He was married to Elizabeth Pierpoint in England. John Thornburgh and Elizabeth Pierpoint had the following children:

+4 i. William Thornburgh Esquire.

He was married to Catherine Hilton in England. William Thornburgh Esquire and Catherine Hilton had the following children:

+5 i. Thomas Thornburgh Esquire. 


FIFTH GENERATION

5. Thomas Thornburgh Esquire.

He was married to Jane Dalton. Thomas Thornburgh Esquire and Jane Dalton had the following children:

+6 i. Henry Thornburgh Esquire. 


 SIXTH GENERATION
6. Henry Thornburgh Esquire.

He was married to Elizabeth Booth in England. Henry Thornburgh Esquire and Elizabeth Booth had the following children:

+7 i. Esquire William 4 Thornburgh. 


SEVENTH GENERATION

7. Esquire William 4 Thornburgh was born in Hampsfield Hall England.

He was married to Elianor Musgrave in Hampsfield Hall England. Esquire William 4 Thornburgh and Elianor Musgrave had the following children:

+8 i. William 5 Thornburgh Esquire. 


 EIGHTH GENERATION
8. William 5 Thornburgh Esquire was born in Hampsfield Hall England.

He was married to Elizabeth Broughton. William 5 Thornburgh Esquire and Elizabeth Broughton had the following children:

+9 i. Rowland Thornburgh Esquire. 


NINTH GENERATION

9. Rowland Thornburgh Esquire was born in Hampsfield Hall England.

He was married to Margaret Middleton in Hampsfield Hall England. Rowland Thornburgh Esquire and Margaret Middleton had the following children:

+10 i. Sir William 6 Thornburgh Knight. 


TENTH GENERATION

10. Sir William 6 Thornburgh Knight was born in Hampsfield Hall England. Sir William died in 1552. Sir William participated in the invasion of Scotland in 1547 and was Knighted by the Duke of Somerset at Roxburgh

He was married to Dame Thomasine Bellingham in Hampsfield Hall England. Dame Thomasine Bellingham died on 11 Aug 1582 in Hampsfield Hall England. She was the daughter of Sir Robbert Bellingham, Knight and Co-Heir of Burneshed. In the Kendal Parish Church in Westmorland in the North corner in the Bellingham chapel can be found a small marble table in her memory; above it is the arms of the Thornburgh family with a total of six quarterings. The inscription is marred by cracks but is still plainley describable. It shows her to be the daughter of Sir Robert Bellingham and the wife of Sir William Thornburgh and that she died 8/12/1582 THIS WORLD. SHE LEFT THERE OF LOTH, ALLMIGHTY GOD HIR COVLE RECEAVE, TO HEVENLY BLIS SHE HUMBLYE CRAVED.

Sir William 6 Thornburgh Knight and Dame Thomasine Bellingham had the following children:

All pedigrees related to the American Thornburgh's (exept that of Delmar Thornburgh) that include and continue on from Sir and William and Thomasine of Hampsfield Hall.

ELEVENTH GENERATION

11. William 2 Thornburg Esquire was born in Hampsfield Hall England
He was married to Eldred (Audrey) Carus. Parents of Audrey was Sir Thomas Carus, Justice of the King's bench, and Katherine. Eldred (Audrey) Carus died on 3 Mar 1596 in Hampsfield Hall England. She was buried in Cartel Church.

In the Cartmel Church exists a small marble slab showing Ethelred to have died on March 3, 1956, that she was the wife of William Thornburgh William 2 Thornburg Esquire and Eldred (Audrey) Carus had the following children:

+12 i. Rowland 3 Thornburgh Esquire. 


 TWELFTH GENERATION
12. Rowland 3 Thornburgh Esquire was born in Hampsfield Hall England.

He was married to Jane 2 Dalton. Jane 2 Dalton was born in Thurnham in Lancashire England; daughter of Sir Thomas Dalton, esquire of Thurnham in Lancashire

England Rowland 3 Thornburgh Esquire and Jane 2 Dalton had the following children:

+13 i. William 7 Thornburgh Esquire. 


THIRTEENTH GENERATION

13. William 7 Thornburgh Esquire.

He married Catherine Langtree who was born in County of Lancaster England. daughter of Edward Langtree. William 7 Thornburgh Esquire and Catherine Langtree had the following children:

+14 i. Charles Thornburgh. 


FOURTEENTH GENERATION

14. Charles Thornburgh was born in Methop (east of Cartmel).

He married Elizabeth Lascelles daughter of Thomas Leburne and Dorothy Lascelles of Cunswick and Witherslack. Elizabeth Lascelles was born in 1663 in Cunwick & Whiterslack. Charles Thornburgh and Elizabeth Lascelles had the following children:

+15 i. Robert Thornborough. 


FIFTEENTH GENERATION

15. Robert Thornborough. emigrated to Ireland where he resumed the name of Thornborough Irish Quaker accepted in America

He was married to Sarah Jackson in 1686 in Cootenhill Ireland. Robert Thornborough and Sarah Jackson had the following children:

+16 i. Esquire Edward Thornburgh.

17 ii. Thomas Thornburgh.

+18 iii. Walter Thornburgh. 


SIXTEENTH GENERATION

16. Esquire Edward Thornburgh. Irish immigrant

Esquire Edward Thornburgh had the following children:

19 i. Edward Thornborough (Thornbury).

20 ii. Thomas (2) Thornburgh.

21 iii. Robert (2) Thornburgh.

18. Walter Thornburgh was born in Warrick. Walter brother of Edward and Thomas was probably married in Ireland before coming to America. He could well be the Walter referred to on a warrant for 100 acres in Warwick "adjacent to Walter Thornbury obtained by John Wislter of Philadelphia County, on 12/3/1739. To restrospect - Walter Thornborough of Cootenhill, Ireland. He, with his to brothers Edward and Thomas emigrated to America between 1713 and 1826. The Sister Judith and Her Husband Alexander Miller also came to America during this interval.

12/3/1739 -- Walter is shown as having land in Warwick.

Walter Thornburgh had the following children:

+22 i. Walter Thoborough Jr. 


SEVENTEENTH GENERATION

22. Walter Thoborough Jr died about 1783 in Deep River Roan County, North Carolina. He was born in Cootenhill Ireland. This Walter was granted 368 on the North run of Middle Creek, Frederick County, Va. by Thomas, Lord Fairfax, Baron of Cameron. the surveyor showed the land bounded by the north run of Middle Creek with one boundary point on a Hill. On the same day, Lord Fairfax granted Thomas Thornbrough 862 acres of ungranted land in Frederick County, adjoining Walter. Jacob and John Moon also on the same date were granted 675 acres on Middle Creek.

This line shared common line with Thomas Thornbrough. Moved to North Carolina after 1759. Walter is shown living in Deep River, North Caroline Deep River.

Hopewell Monthly meeting originated in Fredrick County, Virginia in 1735 was a preparatory meeting of the New Garden Monthly Meeting from 1759 until 1788 after which it became, itself a Monthly Meeting. All records from 1735 to 1759 were destroyed in a fire. This explains why there was such a dearth of information pertaining to Walter Jr. who married Margaret. The records of Walter Jr. and indubitably some of Walter Sr. would have been in this register.

New garden Monthly meeting Guilford County, North Carolina records show that at the marriage of Walter's son Henry and Rachel Moon that Walters wife was named Margaret. It was the mandatory custom for the parents to sign first on the list of witnesses. Walter signed first of the men and Margaret Thornburgh first of the women.

He was married to Margaret on 18 Nov 1752. Walter Thoborough Jr and Margaret had the following children:

EIGHTEENTH GENERATION

23 i. Henry Thornbrough.

24 ii. Margaaret Thornburgh was born in Deep River Roan County, North Carolina.

25 iii. Edward (2) Thornburgh was born in 1750. He was married to Elizabeth Mendenhall on 5 Apr 1769.  He moved to Randolph County, Indiana. From here the spelling of the name became Thornburg, Thornbury, and Thornberry.

26 iv. Joseph Thornburgh was born in Deep River Roan County, North Carolina. Married out of unity

27 v. Mary Thornburgh was born in Deep River Roan County, North Carolina. Married out of Unity disowned on 3/30/1765

28 vi. Hannah Thornburgh was born on 20 Nov 1738 in Deep River Roan County, North Carolina. She died on 30 Oct 1812 in Jefferson County, Indiana.

29 vii. William (3) Thornburgh died on 13 Feb 1786 in Randolph County, Indiana. He was born in Deep River Roan County, North Carolina. 


NINETEENTH GENERATION

Note: all of the relatives I have in the Thornsberry Tree descend from the son of Edward (2) Thornburgh and Elizabeth Mendenhall John Thornsberry, with the main line starting in the TWENTIETH GENERATION through Issac Thornsberry who was born in Virginia and Married Becky McCubbins there, then moved to with his family to Floyd County, Kentucky.
