Introduction to The Thornsberry Family Trees

William de Thoroboughe of Thornborough England, in York was the principal person from whom this linage was traced. The family aquired land and titles some 10 generations earlier from  Ivo de Tailboise, an ancestor who served with William the Conquerer and was rewarded with land and title. Subsequent generations married well and gained further lands. However, ultimately political and religious persecutions drove at least those Thornsboroughs who were our ancestors to emigrate, first to Ireland then to America.

The name has been spelled Thoroboughe, Thornborough, Thornsbough, Thornsburgh, Thornsburg, Thornsberry, and Thornsbury. It was estimated by one historian that there could be 150,000 descendants today. This site does not contain nearly that many, I estimate this page links to about 500 individuals. It is incomplete in many aspects.  All of the relatives I have in the Thornsberry Tree descend from John Thornsberry, a son of Edward (2) Thornburgh and Elizabeth Mendenhall. However, the main line starts in the twentieth generation through Issac Thornsberry who was born in Virginia and married Becky McCubbins there. They moved with their children to Floyd County, Kentucky. So rather than purport to contain any reasonable amount of the Descendants of William de Thoroboughe, the site focuses on Descendants of  Isaac Thornsberry.

I have added a brief history of the genertions from the time of Ivo de Tailboise the ancestor who rode with William the Conquerer. A book of excellent information A Discourse on The Thornburg Family was published by Charles Thornburg III, who is now deceased. A limited number of copies are still available from Mr. Thornburg's grandson at Thornburgs.com. It is a very thorough presentation of the facts he used in his research as well as numerous genealogy sources. Also a distant cousin, Deborah Thornsbury has done extensive work on history prior to that. She has files available at her web site. Deborah's Genealogy Page.

Birth dates and other private information has been removed for any living individuals to protect their privacy over the internet. A Gedcom file is available to other members of the Thornsberry family. You may write or e-mail me at the address on the Send Mail page with any corrections, additions, or to request a Gedcom file.
