Introduction to The Slone Family Tree

This genealogy concerns its self with the Descendants of Alice Slone of Floyd County, Kentucky. Alice Slone was born in Patrick County Virginia, probably in the mid 1700's. She died in Knott County Kentucky. Alice, her son Shadrick, and  two of his brothers moved to Floyd County, Kentucky. Alice was the first women to settle in Floyd County in the Caney region. We do not know her maiden name nor her husband's first name. A descendant of hers, Verna Mae Slone has written a wonderful book What My Heart Wants To Tell which describes the descendants of Alice and their life in the back hills of Kentucky. I highly recommend it. Here is a quote from it regarding Alice Slone:

"There have been Slones living on Caney since 1790, when Alice Slone, better know as Little Granny, came from Virginia with her husband and three sons. They had a government grant to several acres of land here in Knott County. Slone could have been the Revolutionary soldier. The three half-grown boys, Shady Hall, Isom Adkins, and Isaac Stephens, weren't his sons, but as their stepfather, he gave them his name."

"What did Alice think when she saw these rocky hills, the new home for her family? They were sturdy stock and sufficient unto themselves. They were the first white people to live on Caney. For over 150 years, the Slones lived, loved, fought, and died undisturbed by the outside world, protected and imprisoned by the hills."

Shadrick Hall Slone was married in Floyd County Kentucky in 1804, so we know the family was settled there prior to that time. The information I have becomes more complete with Shadrick and his descendants. Floyd County was later divided and the Caney region was thereafter located in Knott County, so records referencing either Floyd or Knott county could be correct. I have struggled for sometime to bring this family on line. There could be several confusing branches and many omissions. If you are of this family and can be of some help I would greatly appreciate it. Also, you will notice many Thorsberrys also listed herein. Since their descendants often duplicate those in the Thornsberry pages of this web site, I encourage you to look there also.

Birth dates and other private information has been removed for any living individuals to protect their privacy over the internet. A Gedcom file is available to other members of the Slone family. What My Heart Wants to Tell  is published by the University of Kentucky, ISBN 0-8131-0174-3. I found it available at Amazon.com.  You may write or e-mail me at the address on the Send Mail page with any corrections, additions, or to request  a Gedcom file.
