Introduction to Gartee Family Trees

The Gartee Family Descended from a French ancestor who immigrated to America in the 1700's and had at least a son Peter Gartee, believed to be the first Gartee born in America. We are now in the tenth generation since Peter Gartee’s Father  brought his family from France. When I started this project there was an fair amount of ambiguous information about our Gartee ancestors. Some said they were Pennsylvania Dutch (German), some said they were French, some said they were Amish, most of the family agreed they came from Pennsylvania.

It appeared at first there were three groups of Gartees who had migrated from Pennsylvania, those who settled in Indiana, those who settled Ohio, and those who settled in Michigan. Eventually it became apparent that all of them were probably from the same Pennsylvania origins. Major breakthroughs occurred with the discovery that the patriarch of the Ohio branch, Frank Gartee was the brother of the patriarch of the Michigan branch, Andrew Gartee. I then noticed that the names which the patriarch of the Indiana branch, Cyrus had given two of his kids were combined into the given names Andrew named his son Ira Cornelius.

Additionally, a history of Cyrus’ migration through the mid-west in the 1800’s indicated he lived in Putnam County, Ohio for an extensive period of time. Putnam County, Ohio borders Henry County, Ohio, where Andrew lived for an extensive period of time. My grandfather, (Andrew’s son Cary), was born in Leipic, Ohio which is actually across the county line from Henry County, in Putnam County. Finally, I was able to find Andrew's and Frank's parents (John & Mary Jane) listed in the 1860 census living in Indiana. This seems to make a case that not only are all these families related, but also at various times lived in both Indiana and Ohio.

I believe all Gartees are related, though the information is missing for several of our ancestors, as well as quite a few descendants. We do not know the name of Peter Gartee's father nor of John Gartee's father. John Gartee may have been Peter's son, grandson, or nephew. Therefore, this page has two different links: Descendants of Peter Gartee and Rosanna Williams, and Descendants of John R. Gartee and Mary Jane Abbot. There a some additional Gartee Families listed on the Lost and Found Page.

Hopefully, further research will yield additional information and accurate relationships. I would like to hear from anyone with the surname Gartee, rather you believe you have significant information to contribute, or not. Just letting me know your ancestor line of Gartees could help a great deal.

Birth dates and other private information has been removed for any living individuals to protect their privacy over the internet. A Gedcom file is available to other members of the Gartee family. A book of this information The Gartee Family has also been published. You may write or e-mail me at the address on the Send Mail page with any corrections, additions, or to request either the book or a Gedcom file.
