We
normally expect that when we encounter another person (or animal, or thing)
that we simply perceive that person as he or she is. |
| The
psychological concept of projection, however, suggests that our perceptions
of the other are colored, or even overwhelmed by unconscious elements in
ourselves. This is especially true when we have a reaction to another that
is disproportionately negative or positive. |

When
we recognize the projection and ask what it is telling us about our own
selves, we can begin not only to see the other more clearly, but to understand
our own selves better. |
