Manuel

Manuel is an approximately six month old neutered black male. He is current on shots, on heartworm preventative, and vet checked.

Rescue got a call from another breed rescue informing us that there was a litter of puppies in a shelter. Seems as though someone had turned them in, alleging that someone had dumped them in her backyard. The consequence was that the pups had to be classified as strays and held for a week in case the owner appeared and wanted them back. At the end of this time, various rescue people worked together to get the dogs into foster care with Cocker Rescue.

These pups have the genes to have a lot of coat. And if it goes for months without seeing a comb or brush or a drop of shampoo - well, it's not a pretty sight (or smell). But as is usually the case, all the pups behaved marvelously in the bathtub, getting fleas, vegetation, urine, and garden variety dirt washed out of their hair. They were also extremely cooperative for getting dematted and having what hair we could save put into a cocker cut.
What's wrong with wet paws?

Manuel is an easy-going kind of guy. He seems to be fairly people oriented - looking for approval. When you take him out on a Flexi, he stays underfoot - or else runs out briefly to check something out then comes back to make sure you're still there. Yet he doesn't seem to be fearful of new situations.

Manuel has reinforced our initial assessment of his temperament. Knowing that he is not sound sensitive and that he liked people, we took him to a Fourth of July Parade. He had an absolute ball - kissing kids, going up to strangers and asking to be petted. He was totally unbothered by fife and drum bands, fire engines, rock bands, and sirens. When he finally got tired, he was happy to watch the parade in comfort, lying belly up in our laps.

He needs to go to a home where someone will be home a lot of the time in the beginning because of housebreaking issues. Manuel definitely has caught onto the concept that if he holds it until he goes outside, the reward is a clean crate.

Because we don't know anything about their background, we will not place these pups in families with toddlers. But every indication we have is that he would be fine with school age kids. This litter seems to play nicely with each other and with other dogs, and they don't seem to have any problem with cats.
