Basil

Basil is an approximately six month old neutered black and white male. He is current on shots, on heartworm preventative, and vet checked.

Rescue got a call from another breed rescue informing us that there was a litter of puppies in a shelter. Seems as though someone had turned them in, alleging that someone had dumped them in her backyard. The consequence was that the pups had to be classified as strays and held for a week in case the owner appeared and wanted them back. At the end of this time, various rescue people worked together to get the dogs into foster care with Cocker Rescue.

Basil has the genes to have a lot of coat. And if it goes for months without seeing a comb or brush or a drop of shampoo - well, it's not a pretty sight (or smell). But as is usually the case, all the pups behaved marvelously in the bathtub, getting fleas, vegetation, urine, and garden variety dirt washed out of their hair. They were also extremely cooperative for getting dematted and having what hair we could save put into a cocker cut.

What do you mean - nobody has ever pulled out the soaker hose before?
Basil is a real character. The old expression about "fools rush in" really applies to him. He's a clutzy goofball without a mean bone in his body. He's very confident and loves to play. He is curious and high energy. He entertains himself well. He will take a tennis ball and toss it, run with it, then toss it to himself again.

Initially Basil was more interested in his surroundings than in new people. But once he learned that people were good for getting cookies and hugs from, he learned to be much more social - and he will stop playing to snuggle. He is responding very quickly to positive training methods. He is very easy to motivate with toys or food.

Because we don't know anything about their background, we will not place these pups in families with toddlers, but he would probably be fine with a school age child.

He needs to go to a home where someone will be home a lot of the time in the beginning to finish his housebreaking. But at this point he seems to be almost completely crate trained.

This litter seems to play nicely with each other and with other dogs, and they don't seem to have any problem with cats.
