Bob Reiling reports that an adult BALD EAGLE continues to be seen at
Calero Reservoir.

Ann Verdi reports that Almaden Valley highlights from today's Calero-Morgan Hill
CBC included a BALD EAGLE seen along McKean Road flying toward Calero
Reservoir, a HORNED GREBE at the reservoir, and at least 20 TRICOLORED
BLACKBIRDS in the mixed blackbird flocks at Calero County Park. Gulls found
during the count included a first-year GLAUCOUS GULL at Almaden Lake
Park. Janna Pauser reports that the wintering BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was
found for the CBC along the Calero Creek Trail at the base of Santa Teresa
Hills, and also that over 50 LARK SPARROWS were seen in a yard along
Fortini Road, and 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were perched on power towers
adjacent to Guadalupe Oak Grove Park. Leonie Batkin reports that an AMERICAN
BITTERN was again seen at the SCVWD Pond today.

reports that a ROCK WREN was seen along the Stile Ranch Trail on the
hilltop above the switchbacks.

Ann Verdi, on one of her monthly surveys of Almaden Reservoir/Twin Creeks found
44 WOOD DUCKS, 3 HOODED MERGANSERS, 22 WILSON'S SNIPE, 2 SAY'S
PHOEBE'S, and 60 PINE SISKINS.

Janna Pauser reports that a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen in sagebrush
along the base of the Santa Teresa Hills near the end of Fortini Road. A GOLDEN
EAGLE was also seen there.

Ann Verdi counted at least 278 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS departing from
their nightly roost at the SCVWD Pond this morning. She also noted that 2 PEREGRINE
FALCONS were still present there, and at least 30 PINE SISKINS were
in a large sycamore at the corner of Coleman Road & Almaden Expressway.

James Turley reports that the adult BALD EAGLE was seen again at Calero
Reservoir, in the same place where Ann Verdi had found it previously.

Ann Verdi reported the following sighting to SBB: "An adult BALD EAGLE
was seen this morning (Thurs, Dec 9) at the lower end of Calero Reservoir.
Presuming this is the same eagle that has been wintering here for the past
several years, it was seen at its "favorite" perch - a small oak at
the end of a peninsular projection southwest of the dam. The bird could be seen
through binoculars from the boat ramp - better views through a scope."
She noted that no loons were found today.

Lisa Myers reports that a BALD EAGLE (in 2nd year plumage) was seen
flying over and around Calero Reservoir at noon today. Ann Verdi was also there
today, and reports that on her visit to Calero Reservoir a GOLDEN EAGLE
and 3 VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS were present. Ann also found 34 WOOD DUCKS,
5 HOODED MERGANSERS, 13 COMMON MERGANSER, and 14 WILSON'S SNIPE
at Almaden Reservoir.

Janna Pauser reports that today a LONG-EARED OWL was seen (and later
photographed by Charlie Rettner) in Guadalupe Oak Grove Park. It was in the same
tree in which a Great Horned Owl had been photographed the previous weekend! A

- this is an apparent first sight record for the Almaden Valley.

DUCKS, 8 GADWALL, 2 HOODED MERGANSERS, 1 COMMON MERGANSER,

Ann Verdi checked Calero Reservoir today, and found 5 minima CACKLING GEESE

Janna Pauser reports that she observed a PEREGRINE FALCON and MERLIN
at the SCVWD Pond today, and that she was told of an earlier sighting of 2 AMERICAN
BITTERNS. She also mentioned that one of the bitterns is noticeably larger
than the other.

Janna Pauser reports that an AMERICAN BITTERN was seen at the south end
of the Santa Clara County Valley Water District (SCVWD) Pond today. This find
comes two months earlier than the one she found last year at this same location.

Ann Verdi reports that a CLARKS GREBE was seen at Almaden Reservoir today
(a first for this location, which unlike Calero Reservoir doesn't usually get
aechmophorus grebes). Other birds there included a MERLIN (perched in a
snag at the lower end of the reservoir), a SAY'S PHOEBE, 30 WOOD DUCKS,
and 2 WILSON'S SNIPES.

Ann Verdi reports the pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL was seen again at the
upper end of Calero Reservoir today. Other birds of interest there included OSPREY,
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and an EARED GREBE (at the lower end near the
dam, first of the season). Ann noted that numbers of waterfowl and shorebirds
are down at Calero Reservoir this fall - American Coots usually number close to
1000 by now, but Ann reports that "this year I can find barely 100 so
far."

Bob Reiling reports the continued presence of the PALM WARBLER in pines
on the east side of the Guadalupe River, north of Coleman Road. Other observers
included Frank Vanslager and Peggy Don.

Janna Pauser reports that she and Gordon Barrett saw a PALM WARBLER in
pines along the Guadalupe River Trail near the VTA parking lot north of Coleman
Road today. This is a first record for the Almaden Valley.

Ann Verdi reports the continued presence of a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL at
Calero Reservoir. Among the over 400 CANADA GEESE at Calero Reservoir
were 4 smaller "CACKLING" CANADA GEESE which stayed close
together. Land birds of interest along the levee trail (which parallels the
inflow to Calero Reservoir) included HERMIT THRUSH, WESTERN TANAGER
and BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK.

Ann Verdi visited Almaden Reservoir today. At the upper end mudflats, a
first-of-season WILSON'S SNIPE was seen, and an OSPREY was perched
on a snag nearby. As many as 30 WOOD DUCKS were seen, and a TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER was in a mixed species flock along Alamitos Road.

Ann Verdi had 2 BLUE-WINGED TEALS at Calero Reservoir today - a male and
a female associating together. Presumably the male is the same one seen on
Sept 24th. In addition at least 8 TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS were seen in a
mixed blackbird flock at the reservoir.

Ann Verdi reports that a NASHVILLE WARBLER was seen in understory
shrubbery along the Guadalupe River Trail. This newly-named trail goes
along the east side of the Guadalupe River Channel by the VTA light rail
station, just north of Almaden Lake.

Calero Reservoir today. This is by far the highest number ever recorded there.
Many were juveniles.

Ann Verdi reports seeing a strange hybrid-type goose among CANADA GEESE
at Calero Reservoir. This bird may have been a cross between a Canada Goose
& a Greater White-fronted Goose.

near the SCVWD Pond, and NUTMEG MANNIKINS were along the gravel road to
the north.

This morning there were 3 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES seen at Calero Reservoir
(which may have included the pair seen yesterday at Almaden Reservoir). Also
seen there were 338 CANADA GEESE, 5 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, and
40 CASPIAN TERNS (several were begging juveniles).

Ann Verdi reports that 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were found at Almaden
Reservoir this morning. This is the first known occurrence of this species at
this location. Other birds there included 4 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and 13 WOOD
DUCKS.

Mike Mammoser reports that 2 juvenile WILSON'S PHALAROPES and 51 CASPIAN
TERNS (at least 9 of which were juveniles) were found at Calero Reservoir
today. Other birds there included 3 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, 15 LEAST
SANDPIPERS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, about 6 BLACK-NECKED STILTS,
and 8-10 GREATER YELLOWLEGS.

Janna Pauser reports the continued presence of an adult SPOTTED SANDPIPER
at Almaden Lake (no young seen). In the same area were there were adult KILLDEER
with 2 chicks. A RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW was heard singing from a hillside
on the east side of the Alamitos Creek Trail.

Steve Rottenborn reports finding an adult SPOTTED SANDPIPER with a downy
chick on the gravelly island at the upper end of Almaden Lake (first nesting
record for the Almaden Valley?). The island in the middle of the lake appeared
to have 11 GREAT EGRET and about 15 SNOWY EGRET nests, with large
young on or near them, plus 6 juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS also
scattered around the island.

Ann Verdi found an early returning LEAST SANDPIPER and 11 BLACK-NECKED
STILTS at Calero Reservoir. A pair of WESTERN KINGBIRDS (probably
nesting) were seen flying in and out of sycamore along McKean Rd near the boat
ramp.

Ann Verdi heard a possible MOUNTAIN QUAIL along the trail to Bald
Mountain, near where Roland Kenner may have heard one on 13 May.

Janna Pauser reports that a WESTERN SCREECH-OWL was found roosting in a
large sycamore cavity while birding along Bertram Road in New Almaden. Other
birds seen there included 3 WOOD DUCKS and BELTED KINGFISHER.

Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society received a report of a male ROSE-BREASTED
GROSBEAK coming to a feeder on Almaden Way in New Almaden. This sighting is
documented with photos.

While on his BBS route Mike Rogers found 4 BLACK-NECKED STILTS involved
in territorial behavior at Bailey Cove (Calero Reservoir). He also found an
adult LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE feeding two fledged young about halfway between
Bailey Cove and the boat launch. In addition, a WILSON'S WARBLER and a WESTERN
TANAGER were singing near the confluence of Rincon and Guadalupe Creeks
along Hicks Road, and a fly-over LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH was just west of
the locked gate on Mt. Umunhum Road.

Ann Verdi visited Mt. Umunhum/Bald Mountain Trail today. Most interesting find
was an apparent TOWNSEND'S X HERMIT WARBLER hybrid. Other interesting
birds included male and female WESTERN TANAGERS, at least 5 LAZULI
BUNTINGS, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, and a pair of YELLOW WARBLERS.

Roland Kenner reports hearing a BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW and what sounded
like a MOUNTAIN QUAIL along the trail to Bald Mountain. Other birds found
there included BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER and an ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD.

Ann Verdi Reports finding a male BLUE-WINGED TEAL in a marshy area at the
east end of Calero Reservoir. This represents a first record for the Almaden
Valley. Other birds at Calero County Park included an OSPREY, 3 CASPIAN
TERNS, and a pure flock of 20 TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS (in a pasture
near the horse corrals).

Janna Pauser reports that as many as 11 WESTERN TANAGERS were seen
flying in and out of a stand of oaks where Mazzone Drive meets Cross
Springs Drive. A YELLOW WARBLER was also singing there. Nearby, at
Almaden Lake Park, there were WESTERN KINGBIRDS and BULLOCK'S ORIOLES
in the sycamores.

Ann Verdi reports that the "Almaden Eagles" team (Grant Webb, Rich
Page, Janna Pauser, Ann Verdi) hit the road today for the annual SCVAS Birdathon.
They only covered sites in and around the Almaden Valley, and this year they
managed to came up with 103 species. Bird-of-the-day was a male COSTA'S
HUMMINGBIRD found by Janna Pauser at Calero County Park. It was perched at
the beginning of the levee trail near the horse corrals. Other highlights
included GREAT HORNED OWL, COMMON POORWILL, and a pair of SHARP-SHINNED
HAWKS at the McAbee Road entrance to Quicksilver County Park; OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, HAIRY WOODPECKER, BROWN
CREEPER, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and
nesting HOUSE WREN along Hicks Road; a nesting pair of AMERICAN
DIPPERS at Twin Creeks (at the first bridge, where Herbert Creek meets the
creek coming down Barrett Canyon); CLARK'S GREBE at Calero Reservoir;
nesting GOLDEN EAGLES (with 2 young eaglets) along McKean Road; and an OSPREY
and strangely out-of-place LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE at the SCVWD Ponds.

Janna Pauser reports that a PEREGERINE FALCON and female MERLIN
were observed at Guadalupe Oak Grove Park today, and the AMERICAN BITTERN
was again seen at the SCVWD Pond . Ann Verdi had a high count of 81 WOOD
DUCKS at Almaden Reservoir. Other birds found at Almaden Reservoir today
included 20 COMMON MERGANSERS, 1 RING-NECKED DUCK, a SPOTTED
SANDPIPER, and 3 WILSON'S SNIPE.

Mike Rogers saw the adult BALD EAGLE perch near the dam at Calero
Reservoir shortly after 7:00am this morning, and found 65 WILD TURKEYS at
the nearby stables. Linda Sullivan also visited Calero Reservoir today, and
found 4 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, a pair of GOLDEN EAGLES (but no
Bald Eagle), and a MERLIN. Janna Pauser reports that 2 pairs of WOOD
DUCKS were along Alamitos Creek.

associate with the Canada Goose flock at Calero Reservoir were again seen there,
this time "quite close to the boat launch area." Ann Verdi reports
that the BALD EAGLE was seen again at Calero Reservoir, this time at
around 2:30pm.

Hugh McDevitt reports to SBB that a pair of HOODED MERGANSERS (a male & female) were today observed along Alamitos Creek at a point north of the trail bridge.
"This morning I was lucky enough to see both GOLDEN and BALD
EAGLES at Calero Reservoir CP. The GOLDEN EAGLE was a full adult
sitting in the large oak tree at the southwest corner of the lake. The Thomases
and Ann Verdi also saw this bird. The BALD EAGLE was sitting in the
largest oak tree on the northeast side of the lake visible from the boatramp
parking lot. It was also a full adult bird."—Kathy Parker, reporting to

Reservoir; an AMERICAN DIPPER where the streams meet at Twin Creeks; and

COWBIRD at Calero Reservoir.

Mike Mammoser found the adult BALD EAGLE perched at the west end of
Calero Reservoir. Al Eisner reports observations of 7 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS
at Calero Reservoir, 7 COMMON MERGANSERS and 3 HOODED MERGANSERS
at Almaden Lake, and an OSPREY at the SCVWD Pond. Don Ganton—who also
visited Almaden Lake today— reports observing as many as 13 COMMON
MERGANSERS and 5 HOODED MERGANSERS there. In addition he noted that a
PEREGRINE FALCON was near the SCVWD Pond.
