Located in Riverton, Utah, the Reata Whippet Racing Group began with the migration of Jack and Mary Lewis from Northern California to Utah at the end of 1986.
The Lewises property in Riverton, to become known as Reata Whippet Park, was finally cleared to allow for sprint training in the middle of 1987. The property then became the focal point for Sighthound Fanciers to run their hounds, eventually leading to the formation of the Utah Sighthound Racing and Coursing Club(USRCC).
In 1989, the USRCC's first sanctioned event was a North American Whippet Racing Association sprint weekend in August. In 1990, Whippet Racing activities expanded to include oval racing under the auspices of the National Oval Track Racing Association. Events were held in May and August, 1990.
Meanwhile the USRCC began expanding Sighthound Activities to include National Open Field Coursing Association(NOFCA) hunts in Utah; and lure coursing, sanctioned by the American Sighthound Field Association(ASFA).
In 1993, the USRCC was selected to host the NAWRA Nationals and the Western NOTRA Specialty events in August. Nearly 80 Whippets participated at the fantastic event, with entries from California, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming and British Columbia.
1993 also saw the USRCC go full course with Lure Coursing and also building an emphasis on AKC Bench competitions. It was after the 1993 season, that the Reata Whippet Racing Group broke off from the USRCC to focus strictly on racing events, but continued to support the USRCC with training & practice sessions.
In the past few years (since 1994), the Reata Whippet Racing Group has introduced Large Gazehound Racing Association events to North American Sighthound Fanciers (1995); again was Host for the National Events of NAWRA and NOTRA (June 1998); continues to schedule four weekends of racing per season (LGRA/NAWRA on Saturdays/NOTRA on Sundays) with dates in June, July, August and September.
Members of the Reata Whippet Racing Group are Jack & Mary Lewis, Jean & Clint Judd, Dean Jentzsch, Pat Dolan, Lee Opresko and Steve Wiley. Traveling members include Jean & Vince Balint (CA), Tanya Muise (BC-Can), Bill & Ann McMath (TX), and Patrick Burlingame and Mary Cutherell (CA).
