Canadian Tenors

Fuse the incredibly powerful tenor voices of four talented young men with diverse vocal styles, undeniable charm and individual international success with an eclectic blend of classical and contemporary pop and you have the recipe for one powerhouse group and Canada’s latest sought-after export.

From Toronto to Tahiti, Vancouver to Vienna, the entire world’s their stage. Since their debut in 2007, The Canadian Tenors have criss-crossed the globe performing more than 150 concerts thrilling hundreds of thousands of music lovers.

Together, the foursome have shared the stage with such luminaries as former President Bill Clinton, music legend Quincy Jones, Grammy Award-winner Wyclef Jean and Canada’s musical maestro David Foster. They have performed on the same stage with renowned Tuscan tenor Andrea Bocelli in Tel-Aviv, Israel.  They recently filmed a documentary where their voices united with local children to bring awareness of the African village of Bulembu, Swaziland, a town being reborn after years of suffering.  This past Christmas they participated in the annual lighting of Bryant Park’s Christmas Tree in New York City which was broadcast on CBS Television.

This vocal sensation combines classical and contemporary pop to bring us some of the most beautiful melodies.  The Canadian Tenors unique repertoire is sung not only in English and French but also in Spanish and Italian reflecting their multicultural heritage and establishing the group as an international success.

The talented singers collaborated with world-renowned producers Quiz and Larossi in Sweden (Il Divo), Grammy Award-winner Steve Thompson (Madonna) and Juno Award winner Jeff Wolpert (Loreena McKennitt) for their self-titled debut album that features a repertoire of classic songs along with romantic operatic arrangements such as Because We Believe, composed by David Foster, Amy Skyla Foster-Gillies and Andrea Bocelli.   These guys are following in the footsteps of my other protégés, Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli,” proclaimed David Foster.

In 2009 and 2010 the Tenors will continue to tour the world bringing their humour, magical voices and memorable music to audiences of all ages.

Quattrocelli

Quattrocelli is four cellists Lukas Dreyer, Michael Peternek, Matthias Trück and Hartwig Christ, following their own virtuoso path away from the musical mainstream. Whether it's classical, jazz, latin or film scores, audiences seem to love the unorthodox style and panache of these classically trained young musicians. As well as producing great music, audiences are sure to be captivated by their energy, passion and, most importantly, amused by their on stage antics!

It all began in 1997 at university. A grant from the Friedrich Jürgen Sellheim Society helped get things started with radio and TV performances soon following. The group in its present formation - Lukas Dreyer, Michael Peternek, Matthias Trück and Hartwig Christ - has been playing together since 2004.

After invitations to festivals such as the Rheingau Music Festival, the group went on the first of many US tours in 2004, with over 80 appearances in the Community Concert Series to date. In 2006 they embarked on a tour of China

Quattrocelli's music is specially arranged and composed for the ensemble. The four musicians produce their own music as well as collaborating with other well-known composers. The group's sound is unmistakable, as no other instrument in the violin family of string instruments apart from the cello can produce such a wide tonal range, from powerful bases to clear sopranos. Each member of the group is extremely versatile: they can play anything from accompaniment over romantic cantilenas to awe-inspiring solos.

Since their foundation, Quattrocelli has recorded five CDs with broadcasters such as NDR (North German Broadcasting) and Radio Bremen . Their next few recordings will focus on particular themes. For example, their current CD concentrates on film music, while their next exciting project is already underway: the music of America .

Lukas Dreyer
is prinicipal cellist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Altenburg-Gera. He studied with Professor Daniel Graf in Frankfurt and Professor Hans-Christian Schweiker in Aachen . A scholarship, granted by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Institute), took him to Budapest to study under Professor Sandor Devich. He was also the holder of a Villa Musica Trust scholarship. In the course of his musical career, he has given numerous solo concerts and made solo appearances with the Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg-Gera, Reussisches Chamber Orchestra, Kurpfalz Chamber Orchestra, Marburg Student Orchestra and Hochschulorchester Aachen. He has also performed on radio and television as a member of the quattrocelli and of the duo con pasion. Lukas Dreyer teaches master
classes and is lecturer at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie.   The arranging of music for 4 celli has become a passion; most of the pieces on the program are his arrangements.

Michael Peternek
began as a student of Anton Niculescu (Uhldingen) and was a junior student of Professor Gerhard Hamann (Trossingen) and Reinhard Latzko (Basel/Freiburg) and studied cello with Professor Brunhard Böhme at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar , Germany .  He won several prizes at the national competition, Jugend Musiziert, and was a member of the Landesjungendorchester Baden-Württemberg and the Bundesjugendorchester, in which he also played as principal cellist.  He appeared as a soloist with the Westböhmisches Sinfonieorchester Marienbad, the Oberschwäbisches Kammerorchester and the collegium musicum Weimar , among others.   In 2004, he was awarded the Friedrichshafen`s Kulturförderpreis. Michael Peternek holds a scholarship with the Academy of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in Munich .

Matthias Trück has been free-lancing since taking his diploma at the Musikhochschule Aachen, working in the pop and classical arenas for radio and television with a variety of ensembles and bands, among others with André Rieu, Die Fantastischen Vier  and with Orangeblue at The Dome 16.  He is a member of the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn and substituted on occasion in the Rheinische Staatsphilharmonie Koblenz. At 13, he was the winner of the first prize in the competition Deutsche Tonkünstler  and became a member of the Baden-Württemberg Youth Orchestra. He also won prizes at the national level in Jugend Musiziert. Numerous concert tours with the Stuttgart Youth Orchestra followed, and in 1994 he began his studies in Mannheim under Professor Michael Flachsmann and continued from 1995 to 2000 under Professor Hans-Christian Schweiker in Aachen . He has arranged several pieces for quattrocell
i.

Hartwig Christ
is a member of the Niedersächsische Staatsoper Hannover. He studied at the Mannheim Academy of Music and at the Musikhochschule Frankfurt under Professor Gerhard Mantel.  He made a further move to the Musikhochschule  Aachen, studying with Professor Schweiker and chamber music under Professor Hubert Buchberger. He is the cellist in the Christ Trio. Hartwig Christ won scholarships from Villa Musica, the Karl Klingler Trust and the Yehudi Menuhin-Live-Music-Now Trust. Repeatedly a prize winner of the Jugend Musiziert,  he also won the Kiwaki competition in Mannheim and received the chamber music prize in Bad Homburg . The experience of substituting in a number of highly regarded orchestras allowed him to expand the radius of his musical activities.  In 1999, he became a member of the Hamburger Symphoniker and played on various occasions with the Lübeck Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Vienna Boys' Choir

The Vienna Boys' Choir is one of the oldest boys' choirs existing in the world. For nearly five hundred years they have been a symbol of Austria . A founding document of Maximilian I in 1498 called the first dozen boys to the imperial court as members of the newly formed court music band. Thus he showed his great interest in contemporary musical developments in Burgundy and the Netherlands . Since then the Vienna Boys' Choir has been a fixed attraction in Austrian musical life.

A number of famous musicians have emerged from its ranks. Its first-class training has produced numerous highly qualified vocalists, violinists and pianists. Joseph Haydn, who actually belonged to the Cathedral Choir of St Stephan, sang together with the court choir boys in the chapel of the Hofburg and in the newly built palace of Schonbrunn . Franz Schubert's first compositions were written when he was with the court choir boys, always in conflict with his teachers, since he was more interested in music than in getting good marks for his school work. Mozart's erstwhile rival, Salieri, noted Schubert's talent in his entry examination, and took him under his wing. The vocal training he received formed the foundation of Schubert's sensitive Lieder. Georg Boyer, Benedikt Randhartinger, Hans Richter, who created the reputation of the philharmonic concerts in Vienna, the operetta composer Karl Zeller ("Der Vogelh”ndler") or the famous Wagner conductor Josef Sucher, Felix Mottl, Clemens Krauss and Lovro von Matacic are former members of the Vienna Boys' Choir, and helped to write the musical history of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Great composers and teachers have repeatedly improved the musical quality of the Vienna Boys' Choir, for instance Isaac, Senfl, Caldara, Fux, Salieri, Joseph and Michael Haydn. Anton Bruckner, too, as court organist, rehearsed his own masses with the Vienna Boys' Choir. If a performance went particularly well, it was his custom to reward the boys with cake. With the ending of the monarchy in 1918, the choir gave up its old name and the imperial uniform (to which a sword belonged). As early as 1924 the "Vienna Boys' Choir" - reformed by the rector Joseph Schnitt, with great personal zeal - gave guest performances in the world's most famous concert halls. Even in the days of the First Republic they were regarded as Austria 's "singing ambassadors".

Since those days the Vienna Boys' Choir have given concerts under nearly all the great conductors of this century: Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan, Carlos Kleiber, Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti and Sir George Solti. And, as ever, every Sunday the Vienna Boys' Choir sing solemn mass in Vienna 's Hofburg chapel, continuing a tradition unbroken since 1498.

When emperor Maximilian I decreed in 1498 that there were to be six boys among his court musicians, he had unwittingly laid the foundations for the Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys' Choir).

Today, more than 500 years later, the Wiener Sängerknaben continue to sing Sunday services in the imperial chapel. They are divided into four separate groups that travel the world.

Today there are around 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. Each group spends nine to eleven weeks of the school year on tour. They visit virtually all European countries, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Together with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Wiener Sängerknaben maintain the tradition of the imperial musicians: as Hofmusikkapelle they provide the music for the Sunday Mass in Vienna's Imperial Chapel, as they have done since 1498.

The choir is a private, not-for-profit organization. The eight members of the choir's governing body oversee its development and guarantee its future. Dr. Eugen Jesser became the choir's president in 2001, and its director in 2003. Gerald Wirth became the choir's artistic director in 2001.

Rudolf Budginas

Rudolf Budginas (pronounced bud-guinness) was born into a family of musicians in Lithuania. He began his studies at the age of four and made his debut at the age of nine with the Lithuanian National Symphony. Subsequently, he trained at the prestigious Moscow Conservatory. Thereafter, he rose to international prominence performing solo concerts throughout the world. Among his numerous awards are the First Prize in the International Liszt Piano Competition, Second Prize in the Vitols International Piano Competition, and the prestigious Yamaha of Europe award.

Accepting a full scholarship from the University of Southern California (USC), Rudolf moved to the United States in 1994 to earn his doctorate in music. Rudolf s passion is to expand the accessibility of classical music to wider audiences.

For his solo concert, Rudolf creates an intimate and entertaining piano show which includes favorite pieces such as "Claire de Lune," "Moonlight Sonata"," and "Rhapsody in Blue". He is known for interacting with the audience by presenting information and humorous asides about the program.

With his charmingly accented English, Rudolf talks about the impetus for his new concerts, "I felt that after my strictly classical recitals, I was questioning if I had more to offer to my audiences. It was clear that they loved classical music but I felt there was more I wanted to do. I want to present an evening with more variety of musical styles. I want to keep my audience constantly surprised and excited throughout a concert."

"I like to relax the atmosphere of the concert," says Rudolf "Because, you know, the concert is a very formal thing. I like people in general. I like to talk to them. And when you have friendly atmosphere, when you explain what they're going to hear, it's much better, it's much easier."

As an accomplished soloist Rudolf has performed in Paris, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Budapest, Salzburg, Cologne, Copenhagen, San Francisco, Tokyo, Riga, Moscow, Los Angeles, Seattle and Fort Worth. His artistic poetry, virtuosity, and passionate interpretations have received critical praise. He resides in the San Luis Obispo area of California's Central Coast and he is a professor of music at Cuesta College. He is also the Conductor of the Chamber Orchestra at Thomas Aquinas College.
