The principle itself is quite simple: the pattern in which the bamboo is woven is a biaxial braid. By trying to pull your fingers outwards, the braid is lengthened. As this happens, the length of the cylinder increases, eventhough the total surface area of the finger trap remains constant: this is simply because the diameter of the cylinder decreases due to the braids moving in an accordeon-like motion. Consequently, the harder you pull, the more the cylinder tightens, thus making it even harder to escape!
