CLASS of 52 REUNION WEEKEND 8/17-18/02

Well, the big weekend is over. I hope the committee takes a rest as they've certainly earned it. What a great job they did...quality all the way. Thank you, folks.

The Mt. Baker Lady and I had an interesting end to the Saturday evening. We went out the wrong exit...11:00 at night...ended up wandering around the dark part of the parking lot for half an hour looking for our car. All the time watching for some freak to jump out of the bushes at us.

We enjoyed sharing a table with DOUG ROTTLER and his wife SALLY...my old friend BROCK WILSON and his wife MARGERY...ALEX REUSS and his wife MARILYN. They flew up from L. A. for the event. In school Alex and I always sat in the back of the room...didn't want to be noticed by the teacher. Brock and I were in the same Boy Scout Troop 386 together.

A pleasant bonus to the evening was the appearance of the current Highline yell staff.

The reading of "I am your grandpa" was touching...truly enjoyed.

Some things never change. HARRY WILLIAMS was great as an M C....same fun loving Harry that I remember. Not to forget ARNIE HATCH...the perfect M C partner for Harry. When do you guys put on your next act? I'll buy a ticket. Speaking of Harry...The Mt. Baker Lady loved his act. After he'd started she asked, "Was he like that in school?" Yes, Dear. Isn't that nice?

The view was terrific...especially coming up in the elevator. For the first fifty feet. After that my eyes were closed... fear of height. I'm glad NICK YOTZ wasn't with us. Retired airline pilot. Be glad we've got people like Nick flying our planes. Can't you imagine ME as your pilot? "Your captain is the guy with his eyes shut. The crew is carrying him onto the plane now."

MONICA SPURLOCK generously bid $126 for a six pack of wine to help the cause. Good show Monica. Maybe I should have donated my six pack of Billy Beer...bought it when his brother was President. Any bidders?

How about that dinner? Thanks, Maxis'. I had the white thing wrapped in rubber. Alex had the long narrow brown thing soaked in what? Was told it was raspberry vinegar. O. K. Alex said it was alright after the third bite. We weren't there for dinner anyway. I had a ten dollar shot of whiskey on the rocks...Mt. Baker Lady declined a five dollar beer.

Didn't all of our classmate ladies look nice? There was a lot of "class" in the Class of 52...still is.

Did anyone find a gold star under their chair? Folks at our table didn't... maybe it was one of Harry's jokes.

FROM THE BARBACUE...

The Committee had me going for a while...I truly believed the fare would be barbacued armadillo. I had a couple of "Whoppers" in the car. She laughed... but I brought them.

One time...years past...I got fried on tequilla. Couldn't move or speak but could hear and see. I thought I'd died. Never touched it since...but... I couldn't resist trying a taste from the jugs of tequilla DAVE HOUSE brought from Mexico. One small drink...but it was good. Thanks, Dave.

Who brought the Bose radio? It sure lives up to the companies advertising about quality of sound. Now SHE wants one. (5-30-04 she got one the following Christmas)

Thanks to the three ladies who said they enjoyed my cartoons in the fine souvenier book. Your compliments were appreciated. The cartoons are patterned after my wife (The Mt. Baker Lady) and I. Life is like that around here. I've sold a few to union papers and for local advertising but have just received my copyright papers. Soon will be sending out packets of 10-12 to different magazines around the country. The Committee gave me a big boost by putting some in the souvenier book...Thank You!

The vintage car show was a real treat, too. Especially impressive, besides all of the excellent restoration work, was the straight six motor on the 61 Hudson. It is a Hudson...isn't it?

8/24/03

The 2003 Potluck went quite well...maybe 80-90 in attendance. A few late arrivals, but Arnie Hatch made sure they didn't come in without notice.

There was one brown and white dog in attendance for awhile. I was asked if he was Bubba Jones...wasn't. Everyone would have known if it was Bubba... he'd belly right up to the table and help himself. No waiting in line.

Lot's of good food available...just about all you could imagine for a picnic type lunch. Notably missing, however, were hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza. I could have starved! How can anyone exist without them?

I think the parking lot was installed by the Fed. Gov. It was 37 miles north of Everett. Well...seemed like it, anyway, while carrying boxes of stuff back and forth. It was a good time, really, and everyone ejoyed the antics of our class M. C.s, Harry and Arnie.

The Mt. Baker Lady and I had a good time...ate well even if I did't find a burger or pizza...then we came home early to find we'd left the two dogs in the house. Couldn't find anything messed up and they were both asleep in their corners. The middle of my bed, however, was wrinkled and warm.

9/2/03

A note from DAVE KLEIN...said he used to have a girl friend much like my last statement (above). So do I.

Also, he states it was him, at the potluck, in a brown and white dog suit. He left to go to a Sons Of Italy Picnic for better food.

I went to a couple of them in Cle Elum (mid 60's) and never found the food...just jugs and jugs of Dago Red. Them fella's know how to picnic!

I DO believe it was Dave in the dog suit...walked on his hind legs and scratched with his front legs/arms.

8/31/04 POTLUCK 2004. The first thing I did the day after the potluck was lose all of my notes. Will have to go from memory. Remember, folks, the memory comes from the same mind that has consistently and stubbornly misspelled the word "barbecue" throughout this site.

At opening time (noon) there were about twenty people gathered but enough food for the Stryker Brigade. Plenty of baked chicken and various salads... someone brought a nice fillet of salmon roast that was great!

Approximatly 60 or so finally settled in and had a good time.

The landlord is raising the rent on the Lodge for next year to $150.00 so the committee is rightously balking. They are looking at having Potluck 2005 at Auburn City Park. By a show of hands everyone felt this is acceptable... Harry Williams voted twice.

As was planned, Father Rose6 and his wife Norma joined the Mt. Baker Lady and myself at one table...Also for a while was Sherrie Hatch...she whom married Arnie.

Arnie announced on the floor that henceforth the family (maiden) names of the ladies would not be used in announcements as they had gone by their marital last names for years.

Upon marriage a lady can keep her family last name, doesn't have to take his. Also, if so desired, he can switch to her family name. The Mt. Baker Lady and I discussed this prior to our marriage so long ago...she wanted to switch so it was done. I never considered changing my last name, however, as Roger Mattson didn't feel right. Sigh!

A couple of days after the Potluck I received an E mail advising that two ruffians (from a later Highline graduating class) considered showing up with a keg of beer and huge amounts of chips. I won't divulge their names pending advising their wives of their conduct. The best thing for them to have done was leave the keg on my front porch then come on in!
9/15/04
I have received a note in my Guest Book from Ruffians Are Us...the above mentioned prefer to be called "thugs or goons". Hmmm. Maybe they can come to the next Potluck...2005...at Auburn City Park. They can help Bubba Jones park cars as well as sharing their keg. I'll provide pizza slices...won't even get out of the parking lot!

2005...2005...2005
Earlier in the year I received an E from our committee member and website expert Margie Cowger concerning the 2005 Class of 52 potluck. Ain't one. Class of 54's Bill Odekirk is putting on a "Gabfest and Auction" somewhere in Enumclaw or Auburn. This is supposed to be for Highline grads 65 and over...a three day event. O K...you pay $20 each to get in plus bring a donation of something worth auctioning off OR pay an extra $25 each. The class of 52 is reserving a table for us to sit at but we bring our own eats and drinks.
If you haven't lost interest yet...like the Mt. Baker Lady and I have...you can find out more by going to his web site at www.Gabfestandauction.com
The three day weekend is Aug. 12-13-14. Bye.

2006...2006...2006
The Reunion Committee sent out a notice a few months ago...sorry, I lost track of keeping the site updated due to a barrage of health problems for both of us...the 2006 potluck will be held at the old Angle Lake Plunge on August 13.

"It is once again time fou our annual picnic. This year it will be held on Sunday, Aug. 13 from 1:00 P. M. to dusk. We will eat from around 2:30 P. M. It will be at the old Angle Lake Plunge on Highway 99. This is now called the Angle Lake Park Shelter and the address is 19408 International Blvd., Sea Tac, Wa. The food will be served by the Armadillo BBQ. These are the same people who did our 50th Reunion at The Cove. All you need to bring is whatever you want to drink-but NO LIQUOR. Due to a continuing barrage of health problems and/or strange people
showing up unexpectedly Valerie and I were unable to attend this year.
Everything should be back on track foe 2007...
