TAIWANA powerful earthquake with magnitude 6.2, rattled the capital city of Taipei on June 14. The quake was centered 48 miles northwest of Taipei, and lasted only about 20 seconds. Cellphones were knocked out for 2 hours as a result of the shut down of 28 base stations caused by the effect of the tremor. |

GUILFORD, Connecticut- On Saturday afternoon, a small earthquake shook southern Connecticut. Although there were no damage or injuries, the residents were nevertheless alarmed when their homes were rattled. The size and epicenter of the quake were calculated differently. Yale University geologist Jeffrey Park said the temblor measured about 2.5 to 2.8 magnitude, and was centered in the shoreline town of Guilford. On the other hand, Juliette Kahn of the state Office of Emergency Management, said the temblor had a magnitude of 1.8, and centered in North Branford, northwest of Guilford. |

AHMEDABAD,India-The most powerful quake in 50 years, to hit the subcontinent of India, struck on Friday, killed more than 2,000 people,and injuring 3,000 so far. The people are in a state of shock. The 7.9-magnitude earthquake, in western Gujarat state, close to the border of Pakistan, shook high-rise towers 600 miesaway in thecapital, New Delhi. The quake was felt as far away as Calcutta; 1,200 miles away in Coastal Bangladesh. The epicenter was located near Bhuj, which is adesert town of 150,000 peple in Gujarat. The area was in total darkness.
January 28,2001-
The count of deaths could reach 13,000, says Indian officials. With each passing day, rescue workers are finding bodies under the mass of concrete and other rubble in the town nearest the epicenter in India's western Gujarat state.
As of February 7, 2001, an estimated 22,000 people have perished as a result of the devastating earthquake.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador-After the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that devastated El Salvador on Saturday; at an estimated cost of $1 billion in damage; El Salvador's economy is more faltering than it was before the catastrophy. It brought most commerce to a stand-still. Coffee and bean fields were wiped out by the mudslides caused by the quake. More than 91,000 homes were destroyed or damaged throughout El Salvador. SANTA TECLA, El Salvador-
Four more bodies were found in Las Colinas, a hillside section of San Salvador suburb of Santa Tecla that was buried by a landslide. Officials raised the total dead to 707. The death toll includes six people killed in neighboring Guatemala. The quake injured an estimated 3,700 people, destroyed over 141,000 homes, and forced almost 68,000 people to evacuate the areas affected. People in the area below Las Colinas who lived temporarily in cars or tents, began returning to their homes on Saturday. A week after the 7.6 magnitude earthquake, followed by many powerful after-shocks, the activity has subsided for now. Meanwhile the awesome task of clean-up and rebuilding has begun in full force. The United States began sending rescue workers and emergency equipment and supplies on Sunday, the 14th., the day after the first devastating shocks. The relief materials worth $47,000; which include 500 collapsible 5-gallon water containers, 60 rolls of plastic, medical supplies, blankets and hygiene supplies.

SAN SALVADOR, EL Salvador- A major earthquake shook Central America on Saturday, causing a landslide that buried hundreds of houses near the capital of El Salvador, causing extensive damage across the country. About 1,200 people were reported missing in the Las Colinas neighborhood--west of San Salvador, buried by
the landslide. At least 61 people were known dead across the country, as reported by Red Cross spokesman, Carlos Lopez Medina. The national police estimated the death toll to be about 100.  The 7.6-magnitude quake, centered off the southern coast of El Salvador, also rocked Honduras and Guatemala; where two deaths were reported. Buildings swayed in Mexico City, located about 600 miles to the northwest. Hundreds of rescuers frantically dug into the earth with sticks and bare hands, in an effort to reach those buried in the middle class Las Colinas area; where a 1,500-foot landslide carried away houses and trees. Lopez estimated that at least 300 houses were destroyed in Las Colinas. Authorities declared a national emergency;
and appealed for international aid to help look for buried victims, and assist survivors. In 1986, an earthquake, with its epicenter near San Salvador, killed at least 1,500 people, and injured about 8.000. |

TRUCKEE, Calif.-Early, Saturday, a series of earthquakes and aftershocks, shook the Lake Tahoe region; which is located near the Nevada and California border. The shocks occured early on Saturday, at 7:34 a.m., located about 14 miles northwest of Truckee. Over the next hour, four smaller temblors followed--including one with a magnitude 3.2. No major damage or injuries was reported. The largest quake of 4.8, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey, was felt over a wide area. The California Highway Patrol, reported that the quakes had caused the collapse of a bridge over a creek near Colfax. |

DAKU, Azerbaijan-Officials said, an earthquake damage set off a natural gas explosion, and ripped through three stories of an apartment building in Azerbaijan's capital on Sunday. Two people were crushed to death by rubble. The blast shook the residents of Baku, already shaken by the Saturday night earthquake, which killed three people; and injured more than a hundred. Residents of this oil-rich Caspian port, began returning to their homes on Sunday and beginning the arduous task of quake clean-up. Rescuers were clearing and searching rubble for more people killed or trapped in the apartment explosion, as was reported by an official with the administration of the Yeni Yasmali district of northwest Baku. |

JAPAN-On the week-end of November 19, the homes of the residents of the islands of Iriomotejima and Miyakojima, were rattled by a series of tremors in the 4.0 range. The tremors followed an earthquake, centered 12 miles beneath the seabed; located about 275 miles southwest of Okinawa. |

ALGIERS,Algeria-A strong earthquake struck a rural area in northeastern Algeria, killing two people, injuring twelve and damaging many houses, as was reported by civil defense authorities on Saturday. The earthquake which shook the area on Friday morning, was a magnitude of 5.4; killed two women, ages 53 and 80, in their homes in the towns of Bougaa and Chemini, civil defense said in a statement. The quake struck a region known for its fig and olive crops; located about 185 miles east of the capital. Twelve slightly injured people
were taken to local hospitals; and eight others were treated for shock, the statement noted. |

TAIWAN-A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck the east coast of Taiwan on October 25. There were no reports of injuries or damage. Seismologists, however, consider its location significant. It was centered above the Eurasian and Philippine tectonic plates. This may be an indication of worst quakes to come. |

JAPAN-On October 24, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake rattled windows in this city. It was centered in the city of Chiba; east of Tokyo. It originated about 40 miles beneath the surface. Earlier in the month, a magnitude 7.3 quake hit western Japan, forcing several thousands to occupy temporary shelters. |

PHILIPPINES-On October 23, two earthquakes struck within a two-hour period. A magnitude 5.7 quake hit about 32 miles west of the province of Batangas on the island of Luzon at dawn. About noon, a magnitude 5.4 quake hit Mati, in the province of Davao Oriental. Both earthquakes originated beneath the seabed. There were no reported injuries. |

HORTA,Azores-An earthquake struck Portugal's Azores Islands on Thursday, killing 10 people, injuring 100, and leaving 1,000 homeless.The magnitude 5.8 earthquake buried several residents of Faial; the hardest hit island in the Atlantic archipelago, as they slept.The central government sent a team of doctors and nurses, medical supplies and sniffer dogs to help find people under the rubble. The search ended on Thursday night.Residents that were left homeless,made preparations to spend the night in gardens and open public places for fears of aftershocks. In 1980, 43 people were killed---and hundreds injured by an earthquake in the Azores. |
| Saturday, May 23, 1998La PAZ, Bolivia-Earthquakes rumbled through central Bolivia early Friday, destroying hundreds of Adobe homes in remote mountain towns. As many as 60 people were killed; many as they slept--as reported by the country's civil defense chief.Landslides came rushing down on roads leading to the towns; hampering relief efforts; and forcing army paratroopers to drop down from military helicopters to get to areas where help was needed.
Up to 150 repeated aftershocks in the first 12-hour period alone, sent already panicked residents fleeing any buildings that were still standing. About 30,000 people--mostly Quechua Indian farmers, lived in the area hit by the quakes; 350 miles east of La Paz, the capital of Bolivia.
A 5.9-magnitude quake struck at 12:36 a.m., near Aiquile; a village of 5,000 in central Carrasco province. The San Calixto Observatory said a second quake hit the same region 13 minutes later with a magnitude-6.8. The epicenter was located 55 miles below the Earth's surface.Montero said 80% of the houses in Aiquile were destroyed. The roof of the Aiquile hospital caved in; and a landslide blocked access to the town. In other areas, hundreds of people were stranded on rural highways; trapped by landslides.Helicopters flew in emergency supplies of food and medicine from Cochabamba, 80 miles to the north, and brought out the injured. Friends and relatives crowded the main hospital at Cochabamba, in hopes of finding loved ones and injured. |
