ROME-On Thursday, Italian paleontologists said they have identified a new species of dinosaur, which lived 200 million years ago; and is one one of the oldest meat-eating reptiles ever discovered. According to fossil fragments found in a quarry in northern Italy, the dinosaur was 26.4 feet long; had a long neck, and weighed more than a ton, said Giorgio Teruzzi, supervisor of paleontology at Milan's Museum of Natural History, to the Associated Press. He said that each of its sharp teeth measured 2.8 inches. It is believed to have lived in the early Jurassic era, usualy associated with more primitive forms of carnivorous dinosaurs. The Jurassic era lasted from 208 to 140 million years ago. "It is the worlds oldest three-fingered dinosaur, and one of the oldest overall," one of the researchers, Cristiano Dal Sasso, said in an interview. The dinosaur, tentatively named after the the quarry where fossils were found, is very similar to another predator; the American Allosaur; but is believed to be 20 million years older. The fossils were found entombed in a limestone block in a quarry in Saltrio, north of Milan, near the Swiss border, in 1966. Researchers started studying them in 1999.The findings include more than a hundred bone fragments; the longest measuring 16 inches. Less than 10 percent of the skeleton was found--including one tooth. |

In a remote jungle of Guatemala, among the remains of a little-known ancient city with a name meaning Place of Serpents, archaeologists have uncovered one of the largest and most splendid palaces of Maya kings ever discovered. The 170 rooms are of the high ceiling type; were built around 11 courtyards--and spread over an area greater than two football fields. The leader of the discovery team, Dr. Arthur A. Demarest, an archaeologist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, said "no one has found anything like this since the turn of the last century." The palace dates from the 8th century, A.D. Most of the palace is buried intact. The Maya civilization was at the peak of its power in Central America and Mexico from 250 to 900, known as the classic period. The king who completed the palace (inscriptions give his name as Tah ak Chaan) ruled Cancuen for about 50 years, beginning in 740. |
- Wednesday, June 21,2000GAINESVILLE,Florida-Scientists have confirmed that ancient bones found in Florida, are evidence of a previously unknown species of ground sloth; the oldest of its kind ever found in North America. Massive herds of these gigantic sloths lumbered across the Florida peninsula 2.2 million years ago; munching on live oaks, magnolia trees and sweet gum--University of Florida paleontologist David Webb said. With a height of up to 17 feet, and weighing five tons, Eremotherium eomigrans, as named in a recent academic journal article, was bigger than an African bull elephant. They utilized their enormous claws to strip leaves from branches up to 20 feet long, Web expressed, and entwined them in their long tongues. The bones were found by a geology student in 1986, in a limestone quarry, west of Ginesville, Florida. Over many years, a dozen of the sloths skeletons, fully articulated, have been found, said Webb. Webb further said that the giant sloths that lived in Florida, probably died out 50,000 years ago.

TEL AVIV,Israel-Phoenician mariners sailed more than 2,500 years ago into the uncertain waters of the Mediterranean, praying to their storm god for a successful voyage; only to meet death in a fierce tempest.American explorer, Robert Ballard has now located their two ships; the world's oldest known deep-water sea wrecks; using the same techniques he used to find the Titanic. The cargo of the vessel, which was large ceramic containers of wine, was probably headed to the Pharoah's table in Egypt, or to the Phonician colony of Carthage in present-day Tunesia, Ballard told a news conference on Wednesday, in announcing the discovery. The ship's contents indicate they set sail from the Phonician port of Tyre-(now a city in Lebanon)-around 750 B.C. Both vessels were transporting ceramic jugs, called amphorae, filled with wine. Its remarkable, the amphorae were found intact, stacked snugly in rows, unlike the shards typically unearthed on land. Archeologist Lawrence Stager, one of several Howard University scientists on Ballard's team, said the discovery of the pristine jugs "was one of our greatest moments."The ships were almost perfectly preserved; a result of the bitter cold deep-sea waters, where sunlight cannot reach, the pressure is intense, and sediment scarcely accumulates.Ballard, a former Naval officer an oceanographer, uncovered the Phoenician vessels about 30 miles off Israel, with the aid of an underwater robot, deep-water tracking equipment and a global positioning satellite. |

ITALY-
The fossil of a baby dinosaur has been revealed in which details of soft anatomy never seen before in any dinosaur remaines are preserved. SCIENTISTS EXPECT THE FOSSIL, WHICH WAS FOUND IN ITALY, to reveal important information about yhe anatomy of dinosaurs in general. Rarely are the fragmentary remains of soft tissue found in dinosaur fossils; and it is more remarkable that in this specimen, major portions of the animal's intestines, colon, liver, muscles, windpipe and other parts are easily recognized. The fossil was discovered and excavated ten years ago; but recently was examined by paleontologists who recognized its great importance. The little dinosaur was found about a decade ago by an amature named Giovanni Todesco. He thought it was just a bird. Only years later; after having seen Jurassic Park, did he take it to a museum for an appropriate evaluation and examination. News of the discovery was briefly reported in 1993; but it was not realized at that time, the fossil was absolutely unique. It is believed to be the only dinosaur found in Italy. The nine-inch fossil, which is now housed at the Archaeological Administration in Salerno, was found about 30 miles northeast of Naples,
in the Pietraroia limestone formation in Benevento province. This formation has been well known since the 18th century for its unusually well-preserved fossil fishes.
About 113 million years ago, during the mid-Cretaceous period, the area was covered with shallow lagoons that were often deficient in oxygen. The fine limestone deposited in these lagoons frequently lead to exceptional preservation of fossilized soft tissue of fishes.
The little dinousaur's jaws are lined with sharp
teeth; and it belongs to the dinosaur group called theropods("beast feet"), which also include Tyrannasaurus rex and many other meat eaters.
The Italian scientists named this new dinosaur, Scipionyx sammiticus in honor of Scipione Breislak, the geologist who wrote the first scientific description of the limestone formation in which the fossil was found; and also to celebrate the ancient Roman general Scipio Africanus. Samnium is the ancient name of the region. DalSasso and Signore concluded that the scipionyx had hatched from an egg shortly after it died. This conclusion came
from the observation that all its teeth were original. During their entire lives, dinosaurs shed old teeth and grew new ones.
