North is towards the top of the photo. The dark basalt flow in the top right is probably from the Holocene period; that is sometime in the past ten thousand years. Studies of recent lava flows in the Harrat Khaibar SE of this view have shown this color of flow to be recent as confirmed by ground studies. There was loss of clarity in the data compression of the photo yet on my copy some of the ash cones were quite well defined with little erosion. The giant cone in the lower center was seen once at the National Archives from another angle and appeared quite fresh with light gray ash flows. |
