Donald Sutherland settled at the head of Milford Sound in 1880 and opened a track from the sound to Sutherland Falls in the Arthur Valley. The only access to the valley and settlement then was by sea. In 1888 Quintin MacKinnon and Ernest Mitchell opened a trail from Lake Te Anau up the Clinton Valley then on to the Arthur Valley creating an overland route.
Mile post "0" marks the start of the Milford Track at the Glade House jetty. With
Sand Flies welcoming us to the Track, they leave a nasty welt, the insect repellant bought in Queenstown had its' first test.
