| UP TOWARD MACKINNON PASS |
|---|
The most difficult trail I've ever traveled is that over MacKinnon Pass between Pompolona and Quintin Lodges. Hacked along the mountain side there were rocks, bowling ball size rocks, boulders, sharp edged rocks, rocks in avalanche fields, rocks in stream beds ... did I mention they were slippery? Watch your feet each step or end up on your tush ... with no way off the mountain except by foot.
We were delivered from the rocks once. A flood washed out a section of switchback. We bushwhacked straight up through the mud and underbrush hanging onto tree roots and each other for purchase.
