| THE LAST 100 YARDS |

Our first hike began along the shoreline but quickly climbed up through a pine forest. An afternoon of shirtsleeve hiking weather cured what jet lag I'd acquired on the flight over. The trail opened into a clearing that gave us a grand view of the distant mountains and, off to the left, Lake Tekapo. On the trail one-on-one conversations allowed us know each other better, in my case finding several other horseback riders.
