Major H.W. Tilman made his home for the last
30 years of his life at Bod Owen, Barmouth and was the moving spirit
behind the famous 'Three Peaks Race'.
The son of a prosperous Lancashire sugar merchant, Bill Tilman had a distinguished military career in both world wars (He was awarded the M.C. in 1917 at the age of 20). He spent some years as a farmer in Kenya, was a highly acclaimed climber and an accomplished sailor. His adventures in his sailing vessel 'Mischief' are captured in a number of books including 'Mischief in Patagonia', 'Mischief among the Penguins' and 'Mostly Mischief'. In 1978 Bill Tillman disappeared on an expedition in 'En Avant' to the Antartic where he had hoped to spend his eightieth birthday. |
