John Ruskin, author, art critic and
philanthropist created the 'Guild of St. George' which had the aim of
founding agrarian communities and the support and education of rural men
and women. His work inspired Mrs. Fanny Talbot to fund a project in
Barmouth based on his ideas.
Auguste Guyard lived in one of the houses donated by Fanny Talbot and contibuted his time and expertise to helping the people in his community.
Much has been written about John Ruskin. Other's have done a much better job than I ever
could. The
following reference is quite detailed and is a testimony to John Ruskin's talents.
Not much is said about
Ruskin's social experiments in this particular text but mention is made in the chronology. See
the HTML version of the first chapter of John Ruskin (A volume
originally published
in 1985 by Oxford University Press
in its Past Masters series) from George P. Landow, Professor of English and Art History, Brown
University.
