Hafod Mawddach

The Staff of Hafod Mawddach are planning a sponsored walk up Snowdon on 24th October (weather permitting). They are hoping to raise money for the Residents Amienety Fund, most of the money raised from the walk will be used for entertainment and presents for christmas. If anyone would like to join us, or sponsor the staff, please call in at Hafod Mawddach or phone to speak to one of the staff on 01341 280053. Your support is always welcome.

Honoured

Contemporaries of Roger Hough (age 65) may remember him from schooldays. He has just been made a Distinguished Member of the International Society of Petroleum Engineers, a rare award, for his services to the oil industry. Roger was educated at Barmouth Primary and Grammar schools, moving to Harlech School in 1956. His degree in Applied Mineral Sciences from Leeds University ensured his joining The Royal Dutch Shell Company, working with them for the next thirty years managing Well and Production Technology Research. Although retired for many years, Roger is still active, where he lives in Canada, giving lectures at Calgary University, and Industrial courses in the USA and Canada. His award ceremony took place in Calgary earlier this month.

Telling tales

As a new way of launching the autumn programme an open invitation has been issued by The Literary and Debating Society to a event in the Arts Room of the Dragon theatre. Fiona Collins a professional Story Teller will be delivering two or three stories, one of which will come from the Mabinogion. Since this evening will be promoting an historic, cultural tradition and will have appeal to many different strands of local interest Communities First will be paying the story tellers fee. All those attending this session on Thursday October 15th at a cost of £3 will also get a £1 discount on the annual membership of the Society if they wish to join. If you are interested in developing a local storytelling group this could be the ideal starting point.

Don’t cook

Do you want to learn to cook simple, good, tasty food but never quite got round to it? A free course is being offered to Barmouth residents over four Thursdays starting October 8th from 10am till 4pm in Dolgellau college. You will need to be able to make your own way to the college. If interested please speak to Denise in the Communities First office or call 01341 280979, help with child care costs may also be available.

Drama

Following on from the recent free taster session Drama and Theatre classes will be run every Wednesday at the Dragon Theatre in conjunction with Theatr Harlech. Timings are : Tots3-5yrs 4 till 4-30pm, 6 –10 years 4-30 till 5-30 and for older young people 11-16 from 6 till 7-30pm. There will be a very small charge for participants

Raising spirits

The weekly services at Talybont Spiritualist Church attract a loyal following with a different Medium visiting weekly. The guest this week will be Sandra Mosses. Following the service there will be a healing session. Refreshments are also served to round off the evening. As always the entrance fee is £2-50. W.I.

The September meeting was opened by the President Mari O’Rourke who welcomed everyone. Meirion was sung to the accompaniment of Blodwen Comerford. Birthday greeting were given to many members and a Get Well message was sent to Rose Morris whgo had gone to hospital. Mari then read a card that had been sent by the niece of the recently deceased Peggy Walk. Minutes were read and agreed. Then everyone who had made food for the Netta Irvine Cup was thanked. It was announced that on Friday 2nd October anyone can go along to the Leisure Centre and play indoor bowls for 50p a game, those interested should ring the centre on 01341 280111 for precise timings. Peter Bunce was then introduced who gave his very interesting talk on “Ringing the Barmouth bells” he had taken a model of a bell tower to show a little of the workings. He was thanked, warmly on behalf of the membership by Ann Williams. Splendid refreshments were made by the hostesses of the evening Christine Leese, Rosemary Perry and Pat Bunce. Raffle was won by Val Vine and the flowers by Ann Williams. The next meeting will be held on October 28th.

Football fundraiser

Barmouth Juniors Football Club will be having a Presentation and Fund Raising Event in the Buffs Club on Saturday 17th October at 4pm. There will be a raffle, tombola , lucky dip and buffet. There will be a Certificate Presentation to all the children who completed the Sponsored Walk. If you have any prizes that you would like to donate for the event please contact Tracy Judd 07851922835 or Katie Price 01341 280603. The teams are doing really well and the kids are putting in a lot of effort, your support would be greatly valued. By having strong local clubs kids learn to work together and develop good character and discipline, their commitment and that of the organisers makes this an important community asset.

Good Health This Winter

Billed as an event for everyone this event is being staged in Dolgellau between 10am and 3pm at the Leisure Centre and the fire Station. Over 40 organisations including Health, Police and Fire Services will take part offering services such as blood pressure checks, advice and information along with exercise taster sessions and alternative therapy advice. A free coach is being provided from and back to Barmouth, please talk to Denise Bott at Communities First for further details on 01341 280979.
