Barmouth Walking Festival

Several years ago, in response to the dire effects of the Foot and Mouth crisis and to take full advantage of the wonderful surrounding landscape, Barmouth Publicity Association instigated the Festival of Walking. The event has developed and increased in popularity, earning a place on the shortlist for a Wales Tourism award in 2007. This year’s festival begins on Saturday the 19th and continues until Monday the 28th of September. 30 walks take place over the 10 days, graded to suit all levels of ability and guided by local walk leaders chosen for their knowledge and experience. Bookings are already up by 30 percent on last year and so far 66 walkers have registered to undertake a total of 237 walks. The website: www.barmouthwalkingfestival.co.uk gives further information and copies of the festival brochure, detailing all the walks, are available from the Tourist Information Centre on Barmouth Station. It is possible to just turn up on the day but booking is recommended, as some walks have proved very popular.

Thursday Medium

The Talybont Independent Community Spiritualist Church will welcome Margaret Jones on Thursday 17th September as guest medium Doors will open at 7pm and commence service at 7-30 As usual refreshments will be served after the service. Further information is available from Gail on 01341 280112

Town Council Vacancy

There is a vacant seat on the Barmouth Town Council, if you wish to see this resolved by election it is necessary for ten electors to sign a letter requesting an election by 12 noon on Friday 25th September and send it to the Returning officer, Gwynedd Council, Council offices, Caernarfon Gwynedd LL55 1SH. If an election is not requested the town Council will take steps to fill the seat. The formal notice to this effect can be seen in the window of Communities First in Station Road and on the town notice board on Talbot Square and in the Library.

Passing

We sadly record the passing on Sept 1st of Mrs Sheila James (nee Roberts) formally of Barmouth. She leaves a daughter Karen and son Brian and brother Glyn. She was laid to rest on the 9th Sept 2009.

Rhys Meirion For one night only

There will be a Concert on Saturday evening 19th September at 7-30pm in the Dragon Theatre It will feature the superb Tenor voice of Rhys Meirion who will be accompanied by the highly talented family instrumentalists Brian, Miriam and Daniel Hughes. To have a singer of this calibre in Barmouth is a real treat as he now sings in opera houses around the world and made his Australia debut playing the poet Rodolfo in La Boheme in Sydney opera house.He is an established recording artist too. Tickets will cost £12 , they can be ordered in advance by calling Mair Jones on 01341 280392 or they can be purchased at the door.

Resume

The Barmouth Arts Festival is being hailed a success by the organisers and the audiences who have heaped praise on the choices made for this year. Audience levels have been good. The Wide variety appealed to many different audiences; On Monday the irrepressible energy of American Organist Carlo Curley ensured that everyone heard and understood every note of his repertoire Mike Parkers talk on his writing and broadcasting was warmly received, The Vicar of Dibley was greatly enjoyed by a large audience, The search for Ol Man River resulted in the very enjoyable find of Huw Morgan and Ingrid Surgenor who delighted an appreciative and attentive following while the Bohemians really brought the house down with dancing in the aisles . The younger generation had their own session with Swsi Kemp and her puppet workshop while Rhos Ladies Choir were a pure delight to everyone who heard them with their lively mixed programme and energetic presentation.

U3A

The monthly meting of the Barmouth U3A was held on Wednesday 9th September in Parlwr Mawr, Dragon theatre. The guest speaker was Huw Jenkins whose subject as “Snowdonia and Slovenia”. Having lived and worked in Slovenia for four years he got to know both the area and its people. Like Snowdonia Slovenia has a national park. Slides were shown depicting the similarities and the contrasts of the two countries flora and fauna. His presentation and enthusiasm was greatly appreciated by the audience . Currently Huw lives in Maentwrog and is marketing Director of a quarterly, bi-lingual, magazine Natur Cymru , The Nature of Wales. A subscription to the magazine was won by Lindsey Burton. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 14th October when the speaker will be, Margaret Durre. As always visitors and new members are offered a warm welcome.
