Parlwr Mawr, at the Dragon Theatre, was pretty full for the October meeting, when Margaret Dunn from Beddgelert gave an extremely interesting presentation on the dating of old houses in North Wales. Settlements and houses were covered, from the Bronze and Iron Age hut circles frequently seen on the surrounding hills of Barmouth, to the cruck houses of the 16th Century. Wendy Bramley thanked everyone for their generosity during a recent charity walk in which she took part, the usual monthly stall sold some goodies, teas and coffees were served, and a good time was had by all. The next monthly gathering of the U3A will be on Wednesday 11th November, when the speaker will be Sue Alger, who is a free-range pig farmer from Arthog. Her presentation will be entitled ‘Life in the Muck’. This winter, the U3A will be meeting in Parlwr Mawr, on the second Wednesday of the month. Anyone interested in seeing what the U3A is about is welcome to attend, especially those interested in possibly becoming members.

Brilliant and sad

Hijinx Theatre Company is one of the most highly acclaimed travelling companies in the country. It is based in Cardiff and booked by theatres across Wales to take the imaginative, colourful and simply brilliant plays and shows out to audiences in their own communities. Whenever this company comes to Barmouth audiences are amazed and thrilled by what a fantastic spectacle a touring group can deliver. Saturday nights production, a grown ups version of Gullivers Travels, was stunningly good, one of those “You had to be there “ nights, far to clever and complex to describe in a few lines. The sad part was that they had an audience of 24 people.

Blues at the Dragon

Paul Cowley acoustic blues guitarist, and Rob Venables harmonica, gave a sterling performance to an enthusiastic audience, in the Arts Room of the Dragon Theatre, on Friday 23rd October.

As well as many tried and tested old favourites, Paul sang some of his own compositions, whilst accompanied by Rob, in his usual never ending variety of harmonicas and styles.

The atmosphere in the Arts Room was warm and welcoming, and the music was stirring…a good time was had by all.
