Anniversary

Melville Penzer, Chairman of the Dragon Theatre Management Committee, welcomed a capacity audience to the Gala Celebration of the Theatres 50th anniversary. He paid tribute to those responsible for the creation of the facility, for their foresight and to the numerous individuals who over the years have worked on the expansion and redevelopment of the building. He expressed sadness that two key figures of more recent times; Harrison Wilde and Colin Havercroft could not be present to see the culmination of their work He also commended the work of the various groups that have grown up with the theatre and for the work they do to keep the place alive and relevant to the needs of the current community. Making a hasty escape from the stage to the lighting box the evening’s musical entertainment began. The choice of Gilbert and Sullivan echoed the opening night of the theatre, this time with members of the D’oyly Carte opera company on stage reviving the memories amongst so many in the audience of the times that they have been on stage with local productions of these fast paced and memory challenging musical extravaganzas. Those present felt that this had been an excellent way to celebrate having thoroughly enjoyed the quality and quantity of the programme presented to them.

Literary and Debating Society

On 22nd October the Lit and Deb Society met for one of their best ever talks; given by Jack Grasse on the much loved local mountain Cader Idris. With SSSI status for its geology the slides giving examples of volcanic and glacial activity were fascinating. Also of great interest were the plants to be found and the reasons for their survival. Some of the history was discussed leading on to examples of modern day management and the people that have been involved with that work. Barry Rampton gave a very appreciative vote of thanks.
