Barmouth News - 22nd March, 2009

Where future events and specific information are mentioned, these are highlighted for easy reference.

BARMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB

The Management Committee of the Barmouth and Dyffryn Football Club met on 16th March to discuss arrangements for a forthcoming heavy fixture list and an ambitious Ground development plan. The Club's First Team now has eleven matches to play before the end of the football season in mid May. Of particular importance will be the next home game against Nantlle Vale which will take place on Sunday, 29th March, and the last home match against Welsh Alliance League leaders, Bethesda Athletic, on May Day, Monday, 4th May.

A "Football Festival" is planned for this May Day, when Team Manager, Brian Harvey, will arrange coaching sessions for young players, followed by a junior "World Cup" competition in the morning. This will be followed by the match against Bethesda, starting at 2.30pm. Refreshments will be available for spectators throughout the day.

Now that the Club's First Team has consolidated its position in the Welsh Alliance League, the Club has begun an ambitious development programme. Plans have been agreed for a major pitch renovation during May and June; Gwynedd Council has very kindly donated £3,200 towards this project. The Committee also agreed plans for the improvement of the ground's stand, tea room and toilet facilities, and for a number of fund raising activities to help meet the cost of such projects. These fund raising activities included a raffle of two tickets donated by Manchester United for their recent match against Liverpool which raised nearly £300, and a sixties/seventies disco at the Buffs Club, Barmouth, on Saturday, 4th April.

A Horse Racing and Casino fund raising evening is being arranged at the Buffs Club on 19th September. All families will be welcome at the above matches and events. For further information, please contact Brian Wood, tel no: 01341 280103.

U3A March Meeting

Twenty-seven members of the U3A met in the Arts Room of the Dragon Theatre, at 2.00pm, on Tuesday 18th March. After the usual tea, biscuits, and general socialising time, Danny Jones, a member of the local branch, gave a multi media presentation on jazz, ranging from its’ history & evolution, to the musical theory behind the construction of certain scales & song forms. The afternoon finished off with a foot tapping selection of songs played by the Barmouth Music Workshop. Sarah Worth of the National Trust will give a presentation at next month’s meeting, on Egryn Abbey.

Swingers in Suspenders

A sell out night on Friday 13th March for these talented performers in the Dragon Theatre’s very own cabaret lounge raised a grand total of £1,111.54 for the theatre and community centre’s funds. The event was generously supported by Barclays Bank, who will match pound for pound the first £750 of this amount. Many thanks are also expressed to the Co-op and M.P. Wholesale, who donated prizes and to everyone who helped make the evening a success.

Barmouth Music Workshop

At 7.30 pm on Saturday 4th. April, the Huw Warren trio will be in concert in the Arts Room at the Dragon Theatre, Barmouth. Huw will be running an improvisation workshop all day with the Barmouth Music Workshop, as he has been doing for some months, so that the first part of the concert will be performed by them, under his leadership. Most of the evening, however, will be taken up by his exhilarating trio. Huw has an exciting track record, including being a winner of the BBC’s Jazz Award for Innovation, a co-leader of the jazz quartet Perfect Houseplants, and completing a recent project with Lleuwen Steffan, exploring hymns of the Welsh revival. For details of the workshop or concert tickets, please contact Gary Roberts on 01341 281137.

Community Centre and Theatre

The monthly management meeting was held on Monday 16th March, Chaired by Melville Penzer. Members were relieved to have a reassuring report of the damage to the wall above the stage and even happier to hear that Contractor Jamie Brooks would repair the damageas his contribution to support the theatre. Everyone was very grateful. Manager Allison Williams reported on very successful events during the month and had booked more in the month to come. All this helps to lessen the huge costs of running the theatre as Treasurer Geraldine Vincent had reported March financesto be very tight. The Chairman reported progress on the property transfer from Gwynedd Council and the move for the Masnagement Committee and Trustees to become a Community Interest Company. Allison reported that 50 people have become Friends of the Dragon, which is very pleasing as the theatre approaches its 50th anniversary. Members agreed to hold a special evening on 30th October to celebrate the actual date of the anniversary.

Lit and Deb

The final events of the Society’s 89th season were the Annual Dinner, held this year on 12th March at the Cadwgan Inn, and the A.G.M., both events chaired by the vice-president, in the enforced absence of the president, Mrs. Rachel Cleaver. At the dinner the guest speaker was Mr. Barry Simner, who chose as his theme the freedom of speech. He applied this to literature in general, debate and his own specialty, writing for television. The dangers of political correctness should be controlled and not allowed to limit reasonable discussion, be it in private or in public. He congratulated the Society on its aims, arriving at its 90th year, and wishing it continuing success. His speech was received with much applause.

The Annual General Meeting on 19th March heard the written report from the president, setting out the highlights of the season and thanking the committee for their support throughout her term of office. Particular praise was given to the Hon Secretary, Mrs. Sheila Higdon, for the quality of speakers and the breadth of subjects covered during the two years. The meeting responded by passing a huge vote of thanks to Mrs. Cleaver, in her absence, and looked forward to her return next season. The Hon Treasurer reported a deficit on the year, calling for an increase in subscriptions for next year to £ 11. He also thanked Communities First for their grant to purchase equipment for Power point presentations. The election of officers saw Mr. Colin Havercroft elected as President for 2009/2010, with all other officers remaining in post, unopposed. Committee members elected were Mr. John Watkin Jones and Mr. Peter Leyden. The meeting closed with the new president giving a few of his personal impressions of Vietnam and Cambodia, gained during a recent visit there with his wife. Next season is scheduled to start on Thursday 15th October.
