Barmouth News - 15th March, 2009

Where future events and specific information are mentioned, these are highlighted for easy reference.

Bumps n Babies

Every Friday morning from 9.30 – 11.30 at the back room of the Communities First Office in Barmouth, the Barmouth Baby Club is held. It’s an opportunity for parents with young babies to meet up for a chat and a cuppa. Ann James the health Visitor will also be there in order to weigh the babies, and answer any queries. On the last Friday of every month Morfudd from Twf and Leisa Language and Play Officer will be on board to give some useful suggestions, ideas, tips, how to introduce some Welsh words and play ideas with small babies in a fun way.

Fair Trade in Barmouth

A part of a programme of ethical and eco-aware projects, a Fair Trade Coffee morning was held at the sale rooms of Walter Lloyd Jones in the High Street last Thursday. A DVD was played informing viewers about the aims and objectives of the Fairtrade initiative, which prompted questions from interested viewers. A range of products was displayed including the expected tea, coffee, biscuits and the less expected string. In the raffle that contributed to the events' £53 grand total Kevin Snow went home with the raffle prize that had been generously donated by the Co-op in Barmouth. In a separate event, within the Co-op store, ladies from W.I. along with Denise Bott of Communities First, attended a stall displaying some of the Fairtrade products stocked by the Co-op. They also handed out literature and answered shoppers' questions about the items. Thanks go to the Manager of the Barmouth Co-op for her generosity in hosting the stand, providing the raffle prizes and for looking after the helpers so well.

If you would be interested in joining a social and support group for deaf and hard of hearing people you are invited to contact Matt and Amanda Harris. You can email Matt at enquiries@barmouth-brig.co.uk or you can leave your name and contact details at the Communities First office in Station Road and they will be passed on. The aim is to create a group that brings together people who can share experiences, identify needs, as well as access services and information that will improve their quality of life. If you are a hearing person who wishes to understand life from a non hearing perspective you too will be welcomed. If you have skills such as an ability to teach sign language please get in contact. There is a clear need for such a group and the possibilities are great. Communities First will provide the group with support in the early stages and help them identify sources of onward funding.

Dragon Theatre

The Cabaret evenings held on Friday and Saturday drew substantial audiences. The money raised on Friday is to be matched by Barclays Bank under one of their community initiatives. The appeal of the Arts room as a cabaret venue has been proven by a number of events held there in recent months. All involved in creating these special evenings are to be congratulated on the results they have delivered.

Healthy walks

The Walking the Way to Health regular Friday walks have re-commenced. If you would like an enjoyable stroll of one to one and a half hours, in relaxed and convivial company you are invited to meet up with the organisers at the Pavilion Leisure Centre at 2pm each Friday. Comfortable shoes and suitable clothes are all that are required.

Child safety

Gwynedd Council and Health Challenge Wales are running a number of free child seat safety checks this month. The nearest one for Barmouth will be at Dolgellau Fire Station on March 25, between 10am and 4-30pm. More details are available from Heather Jones on 01286 679891.

Sign of the times

A walk on Dyffryn Beach is often interesting, a wide range of items appear there, deposited by the sea. This week a metre high board proudly declares “Rooms from 50 euros per night at the Riverbank House hotel”. Google tells us that the hotel is in Wexford and the General Manager tells us that the sign went for a walk, or perhaps a swim about the second week of February. All roads may lead to Rome but the sea comes to the Cambrian coast!
